Talia Cuomo Loves Everything About Being an Actor

Talia Cuomo is best known for her roles on some big hit shows such as “Blue Bloods”, “Life and Beth” and “New Amsterdam”. She has proven she can tackle any role whether it be drama or comedy. When not working, Talia can be found knitting scarves for military soldiers, exploring historical houses, or reading her favorite book. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Talia about her career so far.

1. You are known for your role as a child bride forced to marry an adult man on the show New Amsterdam. What was it like to play such a challenging role?

What was a little challenging was working with the concept of child marriage and the surrounding circumstances in the storyline. To fully become Lily’s character, I had to delve into her mindset, which was unsettling. Additionally, the scene depicting a seizure was personally difficult for me because I had witnessed a real seizure someone was having just a few months earlier (an experience I hadn’t completely overcome).

2. How did you prepare for that role?

To prepare for the role, I read through the script, and read a few medical articles about catatonia.  I didn’t know anything about that condition and needed a reference. Afterward, I practiced with my coach.

 3. The role was controversial. Did you receive any negative reactions to it? If so, how did you handle that?

I haven’t received negative feedback personally. There have been many comments and discussions about the episode, regarding the topic of child marriage in general, and I think it’s a good thing that people are made aware that child marriage is happening in our country. From an actor’s standpoint, it was great to learn that I was convincing enough for people to be unsettled enough to talk about the issue.

4. You were also on the TV show “Life & Beth”. What was it like filming with Amy Schummer?

Working with Amy Schumer was a really fun experience. She was so sweet and encouraging to me and the other actors. The first thing she did when we met was compliment my audition, and I was flattered.  It was a pleasure and honor to work with her. I hope to work with her again someday. And even though she was busy, she let me take a selfie photo with her!

5. What’s the biggest hurdle have you ever faced in your life?

This may sound insignificant, but a big hurdle for me involved orthodontics! Last year, I had a metal palate expander with long bars screwed into the roof of my mouth.  It was really uncomfortable and painful, and I had to live with it for months. I never fully acclimated to it and even found it difficult to eat normally.  I was relieved when it was finally taken out!

6. What is it you like most about being an actor?

It’s hard to pick just one thing! I love a lot of things about being an actor. I love being able to take a step away from my life and into another for a short while. I get to take a person who only exists on paper and turn her into real life. I also love the set, the trailer, the makeup, the outfits, getting up early for call times and being in NYC!

7. Do you have any future projects you can talk about?

In the near future, I intend to write and produce my own short film alongside my dad and friend who’s also an actor. It will be a drama.  I am still developing the story and deciding where to film.

8. Where can people connect with you?
