We’re very happy to have some time today with acclaimed music artist MF Quinn; greetings and salutations MF and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how would you describe your indelible musical stylings to a new fan just discovering your music? Listening to you, we can hear the sweet refrains of tech house, but we can also detect some classic adult pop grooves baked into that as well!
Thanks so much for having me! I’d say my musical style is a blend of deep, groovy basslines, catchy piano rhythms, and captivating vocal hooks. While tech house forms the backbone of my sound, I love mixing in elements from classic house and pop to create a nostalgic yet fresh vibe. When I sit down to start creating a track, I usually begin by making a tech house groove with the drums and bass and then add in elements that I like. It’s fun to break the rules a bit and see what works. My goal is to make tracks that are both emotionally engaging and perfect for the dance floor or personal listening.
Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted and altogether brilliant debut EP Bad Side, which is set for a July 3 release! Starting at the tip-top, can you talk about what inspired one of the very best EP releases of 2024?
Wow, thank you so much! I’m thrilled to hear that. The inspiration for ‘Bad Side’ came from reflecting on life’s complexities in our post-pandemic world. I also drew a lot from personal experiences, like a close friend who reignited my passion for house music before he passed away, and my 4-year-old son’s pure joy when he listens to Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’ from Trolls World Tour. These moments of joy and loss really fueled my desire to create music that captures both the highs and lows.
We’re big admirers of the Desire track off of the Bad Side EP! What’s the story behind this gem of a ditty?
Thank you! ‘Desire’ is a special track for me. It all started with a simple piano riff that I couldn’t get out of my head. It quickly evolved into a full track with deep basslines and soulful vocal hooks. When I landed on the vocals for the track, the idea was to capture the feeling of longing and hope, something that resonated deeply with me while working on the EP. It’s about channeling that desire into something positive and uplifting.
What is it specifically about the tech house genre of music that appeals to you and your musical sensibilities?
Tech house really speaks to me because it blends the groove and soul of house music with the edginess and energy of techno. It’s a genre that allows for a lot of creativity and experimentation, yet remains deeply rooted in rhythm and danceability. I love how tech house tracks can build and evolve, creating an immersive experience for both listeners and dancers.
Who are you inspired by, musically speaking?
There are so many artists who inspire me! Carl Cox and Eddie Richards have been huge influences, especially their work from the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Recently, I’ve been inspired by producers like Mark Knight and the artists on Toolroom Records for their innovative sounds and production techniques. And of course, Daft Punk’s timeless ability to blend genres and eras seamlessly continues to inspire me.”
With the release of the amazing debut EP Bad Side, can fans look forward to a possible LP release from you before the end of ‘24?
Thank you! I’m already working on new material and aiming to release a few singles before the end of the year and start work on a new EP for next year. The response to ‘Bad Side’ so far has been incredibly encouraging, and I’m excited to continue exploring and expanding my sound. Fans can expect more of the deep grooves and catchy hooks they’ve enjoyed on the EP, along with some new surprises.
What does your performing/touring dance card look like in the wake of the release of the Bad Side EP?
Currently, I don’t have any live performances or tours scheduled due to my day job and family commitments. However, I’m definitely looking forward to booking dates in the future. Balancing my professional and personal life with my passion for music is a priority, but I’m excited about the possibility of connecting with fans in a live setting. Stay tuned for performing dates as I navigate this journey and look for the right moments to bring my music to the stage.
At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a-spin to your incredible debut EP Bad Side?
I hope listeners feel a sense of connection and joy when they hear my music. For me, making music is about having fun and getting into a flow state rather than chasing the latest trends. I want listeners to feel the same excitement and passion that I experience when creating music. Whether they’re dancing at a party, relaxing at home, or just enjoying a moment to themselves, I hope my music brings them joy and a sense of connection to something greater.
