The Youth Play share the gritty catharsis of ‘If We Just Ever Were’

London-based recent rising stars The Youth Play saw immediate attention in the lead-up to their debut EP Wildflowers last year, the band hoping to build on their initial presence with an attitude to constantly evolve and transform their sound. Able to present dark themes through riotous soundscapes, they continue to turn heads across the UK capital.

Making a vibrant return after the success of their debut, The Youth Play have now unleashed the new single ‘If We Just Ever Were’. The track is a truly soaring experience, bounding from moment to moment with rocketing riffs in the sky and foundations of non-stop drums and bass. The vocals take on a poet’s position, delivering a gritty catharsis across the verses. The post-punk sound roars, the effects perfectly drown the singularity of the instruments into one wall of sound, the final chant of the title keeping the high-octane dial to the maximum until the very last moment. Furious, alternative, exciting.

“If We Just Ever Were is a song that was written alongside the tracks of the previous Wildflowers EP,” the quartet explains. “The first ideas were thrown around in a moment where we felt we needed to write a fun, not so deep song that embraced the feeling of simplicity, with lyrics delving into the lack of excitement from everyday’s situations, the song aims to amplify the euphoria and catharsis that one gets from letting themselves free from socially built constructions, just focusing on enjoying the moment, as simple as it might be.

The song was written in the context of a big city like London, where its energy and people can sometimes be overwhelming, making you feel captive of a cycle revolving around “making it” or being successful.”
