Exclusive feature Q&Awith Americana singer-songwriter Evan Boyer:

Evan Boyer’s songs have a melancholic introspection to them, as his sometimes raspy-gruff vocals lace his songs with heft and gravitas. He’s been there, done that, and is here to sing about it. Mental health issues? Check. Suffered from domestic abuse? Check. Heartache? You betcha. Love and relationships, with all of the good, the bad, and the ugly? Of course. His songs have an organic grace to them, a comfort level that is vastly appealing. His new album, “The Devil in Me,” is full of complex emotions and revels in our imperfections and flaws. We’re all only human, after all, and Boyer has created the perfect soundtrack to celebrate life in all of its messiness. Meet one of our new favorite rising artists, Evan Boyer!

Hi Evan, welcome back to VENTS! How have you been since we talked last time?
Hey there! Thanks for having me. I’ve been good, a little stressed to be honest, ha ha ha, but really good.

You have an amazing new album that just came out called “The Devil in Me.” What can you tell us about it? What inspired you to write these songs and record this album?
Well, this collection of songs really tends to highlight and bring forth my missteps and flaws as a human, so once I realized that, I figured they were the best to make an album with.
Did you write all of the songs around the same time, or did you write at different times? Did any of the songs take a while to come together?
With the exception of a few, all of them were finished around the same time. The first part of “Mockingbird” took place about eight years ago, and a few of the others had been in my head for a few years

What were the recording sessions like? Any great stories from the studio that you can share with our readers? What was your favorite part about recording this album?
The recording sessions were amazing at Panhandle House in Denton, Texas. It was such  great group of musicians, and Brad, my producer, really knew how to get everything out of them. The special times in the studio had to be when we had the string section come in. It was a morning full of goosebumps. I kept thinking to myself,”I wrote this song??” It was crazy.

What kind of sound or vibe were you trying to achieve on this album? Did it change or morph at all in the studio while you were working on it?
So, I wasn’t really going for a vibe, per se, I wanted to tell a story, and I knew how I wanted that story to sound. I hear a lot of albums, and a lot of the songs sound the same. That’s not the case with this album, and I’m very proud of that fact.

How do you feel about releasing the album now? What kind of emotions are coming forth as you share this collection of songs with the world?
I mean, there’s always going to be anxiety when I release something new, but I think I’ve been waiting for so long that all of that anxiety is gone, and I’m just ready for the world to hear this album.

What do you have on tap for the rest of the summer?
Lots of shows, lol. I really want to get out on the road and promote this album the old-fashioned way. I want strangers to hear me play it live, and go back and tell their friends. That still works, I hope? Ha ha.
