Beat the Drum has announced their first single of 2024, ‘Before the Fall’, which explores the exponential rise of technology’s influence in our everyday lives. This track is a gritty, emotional journey that contrasts the raw grit of rhythmic guitar playing with steady electric buzzes, creating a soundscape that reflects the clash between humanity and machinery. The song features lyrics thick with emotion and meaning, encapsulating the anxiety and tension of an era where artificial intelligence is taking over. Steady brass accents and shuffling shakers complement fill-heavy drums. At the same time, a subtle intensity builds throughout the track, culminating in a chorus of backing vocals that mimic a burgeoning revolution against this new enemy.
Reflecting on the song’s creation, Beat the Drum shares, “We wrote ‘Before the Fall’ about this period as AI develops beyond our technological age into the information age. The period in which technological advances define social, economic, and political life. As we start to know less and leave the thinking to machines, we become just dumb monkeys without the fun. We wanted to get what we describe as a sweet and sour element into the song. So the verses list negative states of action and of mind but keep evolving into the chorus, which is almost ecstatic. The chorus builds as it repeats and has become a favourite singalong live.”
Beat the Drum’s writers and producers, Chris Calloway and Steve Murrell, make music from their studio and on the outskirts of London. Formed in West London as a five-piece, they were active in the club and small venue scene during the late eighties, recording critically acclaimed vinyl singles and albums. After the original band fragmented, Chris and Steve continued to perform under several names, eventually returning as Beat the Drum in 2016. Since then, they have released numerous albums and singles, establishing themselves as truly independent songwriters and creators of beautiful noise. Their music, always evolving yet rooted in their unique vision, maintains full artistic control under their mission statement, ‘WE MAKE THE RULES’. With ‘Before the Fall,’ Beat The Drum elevates their sound and lyrical vision to new heights, and fans can look forward to more exciting and innovative projects in the near future.
