Now on the final stretch towards a tastemaker-anticipated debut album, Shannon Tehya’s message of hope and empowerment is garnering more attention than ever, its meaning deepening with each release. Leaving a positive impact is at the core of her vision, performing a sound she categorises as ‘soft girl pop’. The album Tangled String, laments a broken heart, speaks to the struggles as a female artist and observes the world around her.
Shannon’s latest single, however, is called ‘Bitter Boys’, and opens with the wistfulness of a piano, setting the atmosphere alongside a deep electric guitar tone, the two instruments in a dance of delicateness and power, staying a moment before Shannon’s vocals begin to bring the story to life. The purpose in her words and the anguish in her delivery perfectly place Shannon in a place of force and intensity as she continues to unravel her thoughts.
Thematically, it’s no individual callout but a condemning of a societal issue, a task she makes meaningful thanks to the sparse instrumentation, never able to drown her no matter how climactic it gets. Raw, honest, pensive, and compelling Shannon’s releases continue to strike at the heart of the listener.
Shannon explains, “Bitter Boys is a satirical letter to all the men who have ever tried to break my spirit. I started dancing in a strip club when I was 18 years old. In a weird way, that choice saved my life. However, it also exposed me to a lot of really unwell people and toxic masculine energy, which is what this song speaks to.”
