Welcome to our exclusive interview with Lena Pham! Lena is an up and coming artist who truly brings a unique sound. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to dive into her creative process, learn more about her and her art.
Could you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single? What themes or experiences influenced its creation?
It is prevalent culture nowadays to tell young girls how they should look, how they should act, and who they should be. Society and popular media portrays an image of what is deemed to be the beauty standard which causes a lot of instilled insecurity especially among teenage girls. I wrote this song to remind us that we are all beautiful in our own way. Being your own kind of beautiful means embracing and celebrating all of our unique and distinguishing qualities whether they are physical, intellectual, or emotional. It’s about accepting yourself fully, flaws and all and recognizing that your individuality is what makes you truly beautiful.
How does this new single differ from your previous work, like you single “Scream”?
“Your Own Kind of Beautiful” communicates a more sentimental and empowering message about embracing who you are as an individual. “Scream” is about releasing any pent up emotions and allowing yourself to feel them. The difference between the two is also heard in the musical composition of the pieces. “Scream” is a more hard hitting pop whereas “Your Own Kind of Beautiful” is a softer almost ballad pop song. The music is reflective of the lyrics and messages conveyed.
What was the collaborative process like when creating this single?
Mark Vogel is one of the most talented musicians you will ever meet. Working with him to create a piece that means so much to me is such an honor. This song is so special and important to me having someone who is able to understand and hear the music behind what I am saying was amazing. The song practically created itself. Oftentimes we rewrite verses numerous times. I remember when we began composing this song we were so excited to keep working on it, we both had the same vision of what it would sound and feel like.
Can you give us a sneak peek into the production and recording process of the single? Any memorable moments or challenges you encountered along the way?
Like I mentioned previously, this song wrote itself. The words itself carry a lot of importance, so we really chose a melody oriented around the lyrics rather than composing a melody then adding phrases in. The music had to match the meaning. Mark had a beautiful vision in how he saw the song. It has an almost airy tone and sound. He had me whisper a large chunk of the song after singing it through to create that soft and echo effect. We actually changed the versus around when we were recording at the last minute because we decided it made more sense in reversed order.
With the release of this single, what message or emotion do you hope listeners take away from it?
“Your Own Kind of Beautiful” was created to inspire listeners to embrace their uniqueness and individuality, fostering self-acceptance and confidence. The message encourages people, especially young women, to celebrate their differences and recognize the beauty in being true to themselves. It aims to encourages listeners to feel confident in being themselves, rather than conforming to societal standards of beauty or behavior. It has a message of empowerment and self-love and encourages listeners to recognize and celebrate their own inherent beauty and value.
Looking beyond this release, what’s next for you?
I want to keep creating music which means something to people and empowers them in a way that is impactful. I love music and being able to share it is so important to me and I hope to keep producing it!
