We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed Berlin-based music artist BÈRF; greetings and salutations and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how would you describe your indelible musical stylings to a new fan just now discovering you and your music?
Hey there! Thanks for having me. If I had to describe my musical style, I’d say it’s a fusion of different emotional vibes, genres, languages, and energy levels to create innovative sounds. Imagine a mix of underground beats with a splash of futuristic twists and a dash of vintage flair.
It’s all about creating an immersive experience that takes you on a journey, giving you unexpected surprise moments (because I love surprises) and blending different sound styles or languages. Where you might think certain elements couldn’t fit together, I make them blend in a very artistic and unique way.
It’s a bit like my fashion sense—sometimes it may seem a bit weird, but that’s what makes it interesting and unique! My music is always fun and full of surprises. Plus, who doesn’t love a good surprise, right?
Major congratulations on the freshly-minted new single DROP OUT (The 1968 Mix) (feat. GPU)! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired one of the very best new tracks of 2024?
Thank you! DROP OUT was inspired by the revolutionary spirit of the 60s and the cutting-edge tech of today. I wanted to blend the rebellious energy of 1968 with the limitless possibilities in electronic music today, creating something that feels both nostalgic and futuristic. The track encapsulates the counterculture movement and inspired us to create music that encourages listeners to break free from conventional norms and explore new realms of creativity. I believe this fusion creates a unique listening experience that resonates on multiple levels.
DROP OUT (The 1968 Mix) (feat. GPU) is a real showstopper in that, along with your very human stylings, it features the AI-powered project GPU which is helmed by Luigi Borelli. As we noted above, this is a real gem of a ditty which also happens to make good and ample use of AI technology. Going into this, did you initially have any reservations about intermingling your music with AI, or was it something which you were keen to try out?
I was definitely curious but also cautious. Integrating AI into music is unexplored territory for many of us. But AI is here, it’s new, and I love discovering new things, learning about them, and trying them out. Initially, I was unsure about how AI would blend with my human-centric approach to music, but I was eager to explore its potential.
Once I started collaborating with GPU, who was just starting his new music label, I realized the potential of AI. Working with him and his innovative project opened my eyes to how AI could enhance process.
I believe that in a few years, AI will be a standard tool in the music industry, much like synthesizers and digital audio workstations are today. Embracing AI now feels like being at the forefront of a new wave of musical evolution. It’s exciting to be part of something that’s shaping the future of music.
Looking ahead, do you think you might work with AI technology in future recordings, or does this feel like a one-on/one-off?
Working with AI has opened up a world of possibilities, and I’m excited to explore it further. I see AI as a tool to push the boundaries of what’s possible in music. Especially when it comes to creation and production, AI provides valuable additional inputs. This allows me to keep my creative process fresh and unique.
DROP OUT (The 1968 Mix) (feat. GPU) is released via Made By Robots. What makes Made By Robots the perfect home for this new tune from you?
Made By Robots is all about innovation and breaking the mold, which aligns perfectly with the vision behind DROP OUT. They’re not afraid to take risks and support projects that blend technology with art. It’s the ideal platform for a track that’s as experimental as this one.
In your humble opinion, what differentiates DROP OUT (The 1968 Mix) (feat. GPU) from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?
DROP OUT stands out because it’s not just a song; it’s an experience. It merges past and future. It’s a bold statement that challenges the conventional boundaries of music, making it a unique entry in the 2024 music scene.
In the wake of the release of the new single, can fans look forward to a possible EP or LP release from you before the end of 2024?
I’m excited to hint at the possibility of something more on the horizon. While I’d love to unravel the mystery and share every detail, I believe there’s a special magic in keeping a few surprises tucked away.
