The Crunchwrap Supreme: For When You Want Something Different

Every fast food place needs the item that you get when you don’t want to get your regular order. These items are usually not anybody’s first choice, but they are a comfortable second choice when you want some variety. A different burger, a different sandwich, what have you. Chicken nuggets or tenders usually do not serve such an option. They are more a full-on alternative. You either are a chicken nuggets consumer, or you aren’t. At the very least, they aren’t your secondary option.

I was thinking about this because I do believe the best, quintessential second-choice fast food item is the Crunchwrap Supreme at Taco Bell. Since 2005, it has been the thing to order when you don’t want a burrito or a Cheesy Gordita Crunch. You don’t pivot to a Chalupa or a Mexican Pizza. No, you go with the Crunchwrap Supreme.

The Crunchwrap is good. It’s solid. It’s different, but not too different. I mean, Taco Bell famously has a menu built upon taking like eight different ingredients and mixing them up. The Crunchwrap takes taco ingredients, lays them on an unfolded hard corn tortilla, and wraps the whole thing in a soft flour tortilla. It’s almost like a wider, flatter, less messy burrito, save for the hard-shelled tortilla. That’s what gives it structure and makes it convenient.

When I was a frequent Taco Bell eater, I was all in on the Cheesy Gordita Crunch. On occasion, though, I wanted a change, and I would go with the Crunchwrap Supreme. I know other people who operate in the same way. These days, I order from the vegetarian menu on the rare occasions I eat Taco Bell (and it is banished by my “no trash food” resolution for 2024), but the Crunchwrap Supreme is still in the mix. Sometimes, it’s what you want…but only sometimes.
