Montreal, McSorley, ‘Sports Illustrated’, And 1990s Computing

I got into hockey in 1994. It was during the NHL playoffs. I remember the New York Rangers besting the New Jersey Devils in seven games, but then they were to face the Vancouver Canucks, who I was rooting for. As a child, I was taken with the Canucks. Sure, I could claim it was because of how dynamic Pavel Bure was, or the grit of Trevor Linden, but I was a little kid and I thought they had cool jerseys and I was hearing about Vancouver for the first time and was intrigued by this mysterious Canadian city. The Rangers won the Cup, their first since 1940. I was not in a position to appreciate that at the time.

Now, 30 years later, in theory the Canucks and Rangers could meet again in the finals, and that would be cool. I am definitely rooting for one of the two remaining Canadian teams, the Canucks and the Oilers, to win it all. My Wings aren’t in the playoffs, so why not root for the Great White North as a whole? The last Canadian team to win a Cup was Montreal in 1993, the year before I started paying attention to the NHL. I remember the Canadiens’ Cup win fairly well, though. I can thank Sports Illustrated for that, and a bygone bit of technology.

We had a computer in the mid-1990s, but it was what you imagine. We didn’t have the internet. It had a floppy disk port, as well as a CD-ROM port. I could play Treasure Mathstorm or make art with KidPix. However, I also had a CD-ROM that was a Sports Illustrated almanac for the year 1993. This CD-ROM had video content! It featured pertinent information on all the major 1993 sporting events, including the finals and title games of all the major sports leagues. That included the NHL.

Thus, I saw the highlight package related to the 1993 Stanley Cups Finals between the Canadiens and the Kings. I saw Marty McSorley’s stick with too much of a curve to it. This was before the internet or streaming, so I watched all of these packages multiple times. I must have seen the digest version of Montreal-Los Angeles at least a half-dozen times.

Maybe a Canadian team will win the Cup in 2024. If they do, I will not be watching the recap on CD-ROM.
