20 Hidden Seconds Well Worth It

Are there good goof arounds at the end of albums? The answer is yes. You probably figured that out, because if the answer was no, where would I go from there. I’ve been listening to a lot of jangle rock and jangle pop this year, and so I have stumbled upon Cub, a Canadian indie pop band from the ‘90s. Their first album, Betti-Cola, is an amalgamation of a bunch of lo-fi EPs and covers, so it is hit or miss, but the album art is Archie comics style, so it rules.

In 2007, the album was re-released with some bonus tracks. It was already 53 minutes long, so Betti-Cola didn’t need the extra bit. However, I’m glad we got it. Thanks to Spotify, hidden tracks aren’t really hidden tracks any longer, which made it easy for me to find “Wipeout!.” It’s delightful. It’s not a song, but it’s delightful.

“Wipeout!” is all of 20 seconds. It comes from some live show. Some dipshits in the crowd, including one loudmouth, are disrupting the show. One of the band members, I assume frontwoman Lisa Marr, disingenuously engages with the crowd, and the loudmouth yells for them to play “Wipeout,” which is one step away from shouting “Freebird!” She says sure, we’ll play “Wipeout.” What follows is like five seconds of half-hearted fast drumming and a couple strums of a guitar. They stop. There, they did it. Happy now?

It’s such a delightful bit of antagonism, and well earned by the crowd. So yes, sometimes a goof around hidden at the end of an album is totally worth it.
