Josh Brolin Breaks Down What Annoys Him About Acting

Josh Brolin was born into the entertainment industry. The son of actor James Brolin, Josh got his first big break in the movies with 1985’s The Goonies before moving on to such fare as Thrashin’ and TV staples like Highway to Heaven and 21 Jump Street and – memorably – The Young Riders. However, it wasn’t until 2007’s No Country for Old Men that he was treated with more than a fleeting interest from audiences and studios alike. Suddenly, the younger Brolin who had almost always worked quite steadily in mostly underseen productions, was everywhere. Fast forward all of these years later and the Catch Me If You Can star can be found turning heads and winning hearts with his star turn in the series Outer Range, the success of which has also afforded him the chance recently to direct an episode. Now that the 56-year old Santa Monica native has worked both behind and in front of the camera, you might think that he has some definite opinions about the craft of acting. According to our Living In Oblivion fans over at The Hollywood Reporter, you would be correct in your assessment.

In a far-ranging interview, Brolin opened up about the one thing which really riles him up when it comes to the craft of acting. Previously he had caught some negative blowback when matter-of-factly telling late night television host Jimmy Kimmel that he didn’t “particularly love actors as an actor.” Now the Dune II actor is clarifying those comments in hopes of setting the record straight.

Brolin explained that it can sometimes test his patience when it comes to those thespians whose acting process is a little against the grain: “Especially people who won’t come to the set and that kind of shit. If there’s a good reason, I get it, but if you’re just an irritated actor because you’re so creative or sensitive, I just don’t buy it.”

As for his own recent stint directing that aforementioned episode of Outer Range, Brolin wants fans to know that he has no plans of leaving acting behind at the end of the day.

“I’m not going to quit acting and just be a director,” Brolin asserts. “But it utilizes more of my sensibilities as a person. I’m naturally a communal person. I get excited by experimenting. To imprison that with just me feels really limiting. But I may just be a mediocre actor.”
