The History of the Disability Empowerment

Disability empowerment is embracing and celebrating everybody’s individuality as a unique input in the beauty of societal diversity. It is a core aspect of the movement for inclusivity, firmly correcting the stigmatization ideologies of people with unique abilities. National Disability Pride Month is held annually in July to observe the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act passed on July 26, 1990.

This important event started in 1990 in Boston, being a day’s celebration. In 2004, Chicago then hosted the first Parade in the US. Now, more parades are proudly hosted nationwide in cities including Los Angeles, New York City, San Antonio, and Madison, geared towards empowering persons with unique abilities to celebrate and appreciate their uniqueness.

These feature clear, beautiful pictures and inspiring words that educate and encourage visibility while raising awareness of disabled persons’ positive pride. They present a platform for people with unique abilities, caregivers, and those not disabled to celebrate the disability culture, steadily altering the stigmas associated with disabilities.

For example, the 2024 theme from The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates is “We Want a Life Like Yours.” This year’s event aims to emphasize the community’s vision to experience all parts of life, which are often limited by their special needs. In July 2024, we will exchange different tales of triumphs of individuals with various abilities excelling as leaders, scholars, and members of corporate teams, making valuable contributions to their communities to inspire the group.

Since the birth of the pride month, secondary campaigns have been introduced for people with other unique abilities. In 2005, Autistic Pride Day was hosted to spread awareness and improve understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Now, June 18th marks the date for this annual event.

Why Is it of Great Importance?

According to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the activist and political philosopher well-known for his “I Have a Dream” speech, “As long as the mind is enslaved, the body can never be free.

Unfortunately, as a result of the dissemination of wrong ideas and gaps in communication, disabled persons are wrongfully considered as a less respected sect of the community. If these people continue to be subjected to these ideas, they may keep believing they are not as valued. They may never understand that they can achieve genuine equality and liberation to thrive in society.

The July disability pride month is hinged on this goal—celebrating the unique strengths and abilities of these persons and reminding them that they matter!

Conclusion

Pride Month celebration for disabled persons takes place every year in July. It is a noteworthy opportunity to remember the stories and events leading up to the adoption of this positively proud month while acknowledging the accomplishments, backgrounds, and challenges of the members of the community.
