INTERVIEW: Bishat

We’re very happy to be speaking today with acclaimed Grammy-nominated Swedish R&B and Pop artist Bishat; greetings and salutations Bishat and welcome to Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how is 2024 treating you and yours?

It’s treating me grand! A little hectic but in a good way! I just put out one of my favorite songs to date, attended the Swedish Grammy’s as a nominee, celebrated my bday as well as my daughters first… Ok borderline burned out lol but i’m having a few days off now to recharge.

Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted new single Supersonic P*$$y which is easily one of the very best tracks of 2024! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired you to record this playful gem of a ditty?

Thank you so much! It was spring, I was in the studio with my best friend and my boyfriend and we we’re just having fun which is always the best way to start a song. I was due to give birth within a week so we didn’t finish it just had the track and some melodies. Fast forward to the delivery room.. I had made a long playlist with a bunch of R&B tracks and the moment my daughter came out P*$$y Fairy by Jhené Aiko was playing which was pretty fitting. So when I got back to the studio I was inspired by that song and how incredible my body had been. I felt so strong, sexy and unstoppable. I felt like no one could say shit to me ever again. I’m a force of nature!

Supersonic P*$$y is released via MINAMIN which is your own label; congrats! What led you to decide to establish your own label?

You always hear about artists not being happy with their labels and so I figured I’d learn all the ins and outs of the industry right.. You have to understand the game before you start playing. I ended up working at Universal Music for about 2 years, then quit and started my own shop with all I learned and the connects. At the end of the day though for me it’s about working with people who are passionate about music and really love what I do.. Those are the people I wanna work with regardless if that’s someone on a major label, indie or any other industry to be honest. I’m slowly building my team.

Being a respected producer in your own right, did you do the producing honors on Supersonic P*$$y and, if so, what are the pros to serving as your own producer?

I didn’t produce the track. I’m very involved in the process but I’ve learnt that I can’t do it all and do it well in a limited time so i’ve focussed on the writing, the visual concepts and label side of things. Plus I love collaborating with others and this one is produced by Rikard de Bruin who I work a lot with so it’s pretty smooth when it’s someone who knows you and are equally attentive to detail.

The pros of being your own producer I guess is that what you create is a 100% you, not necessarily better, just different. And not having to depend on anyone else of course. Depends so much on who you work with. I started producing because I felt I had a vision that wasn’t always being heard in sessions. A lot of dudes out there who listen but don’t really hear you…

In your humble opinion, what differentiates Supersonic P*$$y from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?

In my highly biased opinion it’s a smash. I mean It’s not something revolutionary, I didn’t invent the wheel with it but it’s got a lot of heart, sass, fun instrumentation and a good mix of pop, disco and R&B.

You’ve been nominated for a Swedish Grammy for R&B.Soul Singer of the Year; Wow and congratulations, again! What does this particular honor and recognition mean to you?

Thank you!!! I get emotional talking about this but as a completely independent artist with no label, publisher, management and no major backing it’s really unusual to get that kind of recognition. I’ve built this from the ground up and it’s been tough and sometimes you wonder if anyone even cares and if anyone but your friends hear your music. Mom thinks i’m great and i’m very happy about that but to walk that red carpet and see my little face on the bug screen, hearing my music play infront of the entire industry was definitely a milestone. And that was for my debut EP.. On the album i’m taking home the trophy hahah manifesting that at least!

Who are you inspired by, both in and out of the world of music?

Just having become a mother I am inspired by other artists who manage to have a career and a family. Rihanna, Victoria Monét, my fellow swedes Icona Pop are all killing it and it’s really inspiring. A few years ago people didn’t really talk about or show that side of their lives, felt like you couldn’t do both so I’m happy that the narrative is changing.

Word ‘round industry campfire has it that you’re currently working on your debut album which is set for a Spring 2025 release; congrats again! Can you give fans a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to with this eagerly-anticipated LP release?

Ooooh not a lot, except like always with me it’s gonna be personal, it’s gonna be real and it’s gonna be eclectic. I don’t do a genre like that, I love mixing it up but with a common thread being my melodic and lyrical style.

In the wake of the release of the new single, what does your touring/performing dance card look like in the coming weeks and months?

I’m planning a few shows for the summer (to be announced) and hopefully a little tour in autumn.

When working on new material, what does your creative process generally tend to look like? Is there a method to the creative madness, or is it a bit more freeform than all of that?

Usually I get people I love in a room and we talk and vibe and find chords that set the tone. Then we work on melodies and then I find the right words. I really like to take my time with lyrics and I’ve completely stepped away from that one song, one day approach. I let things take time like a fine wine. Sometimes songs just flow out of you like water and that’s great to but I don’t expect it. Sometimes I just sit by myself at home by the piano and write. I love that too, that’s how I started writing music when I was a teen.

Any final thoughts you might like to leave fans with regarding your amazing new single Supersonic P*$$y?

It’s a song to make you feel good about yourself and your body. Is like a love song to ourselves. I want everyone to feel sexy this summer, to feel like goddesses and sprinkle P*$$y fairy dust wherever you go!
