After a long journey that saw him collaborate with different bands and other people, for the first time in his career, Daniels entered the studio without a strict set of songs to record. Instead, this was to be an exploratory session. The goal was to unearth the 20-25 ideas that had come and gone through the years and knead them into something tangible, something visceral, something approximating who Asa Daniels the solo artist is.
This was an experiment, likely to deliver 0 songs just as well as 10. In the end, the crew tracked 8 songs. As the dust settles, new music is ready for release in 2024. As a collection, I’ve Run Out of Boxes to Put Things In stays true to Daniels’s unrelenting writing, ultimately inviting the listener to explore his work with Baked Goods and Gooseberry along the route to a destination uniquely its own. This can be greatly appreciated in the new glimpse of the record titled “Hello Barcelona,” which we’re pleased to premiere today.
Daniels comment “Hello Barcelona is a song of gratitude. The initial idea came to me, ironically, while in Brazil in 2019, where I was on a trip with friends. I was thinking about how fortunate I am to be able to take trips like this, with good friends, seeing the world, getting into all kinds of mischief. And I was thinking about a previous excursion that found us in Barcelona, a city that was always sort of a home base for us. A large part of this is autobiographical (yes, there really was a night I drank myself to oblivion and fell asleep on the steps of our apartment in the cool Barcelona air). But another part of this tune is a general thank you to my friends, my family, and the universe for granting me the opportunity to experience life as I have, warts and all. Musically, this tune harkens back to my initial influences: Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, a lot of the 60s/70s sound. It’s all very natural sounding, like something you’d hear a band playing while stumbling into the third bar of the evening… I was also real fortunate to get my buddy Brad Goodall to add piano to this tune, as he has done live with Gooseberry. I think it’s the pièce de résistance if you will…”
