Newly Announced “Downton Abbey” Sequel Lands Oscar Nominated Paul Giamatti for Cast

Chances are that if you’re both a Paul Giamatti and Downton Abbey fan, then today is a fine day indeed: From our ever-posh pals over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the intriguing bit of news that not only is perennial fan-favorite series-turned-movie franchise Downton Abbey coming back for a third big screen outing, but also that they landed (or ‘Re-landed’ as the case might be) one of the best actors in the business in a plum role, Paul Giamatti.

For anyone questioning how Sideways star Paul Giamatti might follow-up his most recent Oscar-nominated turn in the crowd-pleasing flick The Holdovers, look no further: The New Haven, Connecticut native has decided to return to the role of Harold Levinson, a part which he first portrayed in the Downton Abbey television series lo those many moons ago. Giamatti will be joined by fellow thespians Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan. Looks like they’ll all be jostling for screen-time as it’s been announced that Downton alums Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, Douglas Reith and Dominic West will all be reprising their well-known roles from the series and the two previous films.

The plot for the third Downton Abbey film is being guarded tighter than the First Class entrance at the Met, but we can safely assume that it will in some manner carry forward the story of the Crawley family and their servants as they face the various and sundry challenges of the early 20th Century. What we do know is that the new film is being written by Downton guru Julian Fellowes, with returning director Simon Curtis assuming the vaunted director’s chair yet again.

Always nice to see a little ‘counter-programming’ at our local cinemas, especially in this day and age! Stay tuned for more Downton Abbey sequelupdates than you can shake a feather duster at, True Believers!
