Mama B’s first single “Puffer Fish”

I find Mama B’s first single “Puffer Fish” one of the most beguiling pop songs in recent memory. This first cut from her debut album Imaginology is an excellent representation of the unique artistic and musical vision that she brings to bear. She achieves such a standing without any bells or whistles. Solid pop songwriting fundamentals and a magical sense of wonder permeate the song and give it surprising durability. It gets under your skin with a single listen and invites multiple replays.

Writing for children often prompts songwriters to simplify their work too much. They treat kids as idiots, incapable of understanding even a sliver of subtlety, and essentially good-natured rubes who are amused and pleased by the lowest common denominator. However, Mama B never panders or plays down to those listeners.

The puffer fish is one of nature’s truly unique creations, and Mama B describes its life in sparse, no-frills language sure to linger in the listener’s mind – whatever their age. It’s fun. There’s no other way to put it.

It has an effervescent bounce present in every aspect of its presentation. I hear her aiming this primarily at kids, without a doubt, but “Puffer Fish” possesses such a friendly character that any open-minded listener will enjoy its trajectory.
