Milan McAlevy is dropping his second single, “Time Has Passed Me By”, to mark the release of his newest LP, Bucksport Motel. McAlevy describes the song as both his best and most literal work to date.
A track about growing older, McAlevey hopes he’s “…capturing a universal sentiment that will become relevant for each one of us sooner or later, that feeling of ennui that only comes with the realization that the younger generation has their own passions, summed up in the first verse lyric, “all the shit I thought was coo, well, it ain’t cool no more.”
The track is a stand out on an LP full of multi instrumental and highly collaborative tracks. McAlevey enlisted the help of his family, friends, and even his neighbors in the instrumentation, utilizing 1950s lap steel guitars, electric pianos, and a motley crew of different back up vocalists.
Bucksport Motel is a work about growing older – the challenges, the serendipities, and the joyous and painful unavoidables. It especially focuses on tthe effects alcohol has had on McAlevey’s life and perception of the world around him.
In his words, “alcohol is too damn strong. It can completely change the way you see the world in a matter of minutes. No wonder it has a near divine status in human culture inspiring entire genres of music from Palm-Wine to Honky Tonk. Speaking of the latter, I grew up listening to country music, but It wasn’t until a deep dive with Brian Eno’s Apollo soundtrack that I appreciated the weightless glide inherent in stuff like old Freddy Fender records. Not to overstate it but I had to get my lap steel chops together on the old Magnatone to achieve zero gravity. That opened up a great big canvas onto which the lyrics easily poured.
