We’re very happy to have some time today with acclaimed singer and songwriter Liv Miraldi; greetings and salutations and welcome to Vents Magazine, Liv! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how is 2024 treating you and yours?
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me and listen to my new song “Teeth.” So far, 2024 has been full of surprises, travel, and a ton of amazing music. I really can’t complain.
Major congratulations on your incredible new single Teeth which stands as one of the very best single releases of 2024! Starting at the top, can you talk a little about what inspired this gem of a ditty?
Wow, thank you so much. This song was inspired by – you guessed it- depression. It’s a melancholic reflection of the transition from girlhood to adulthood. It’s a realization that I’m not as happy-go-lucky as I once was.
In your humble opinion, what differentiates Teeth from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?
There’s so much great music out there; it is super difficult to cut through the noise. However, I do think people have a way of finding great music, even if it takes a few months, or sometimes, years. When I was writing Teeth I tried to make a memorable song while simultaneously trying to focus on my own lane and follow my pen where it needs to go. I’ve found comparing myself and my songs to other artists is more of a distraction. All I can do is make the art, tell the world about the art, and the rest is up to fate more or less.
Who did the producing honors on Teeth and what did the collaboration process look like between artist and producer while in the studio working on the new tune?
My music sister, Ella Boh produced Teeth. She is one of the most talented producers, writers, and artists I know and I’m so lucky she was willing to help me flesh out this vision. Ella has this superpower of being able to see the full picture- I’m so detail oriented and she’s so big picture focused that it really was a perfect match. She kept me honest and consistently pushed me to beat melodies and lyrics. She challenged me and helped me to develop a sound that she knows reflects my personality. When it comes to artist development, this 22 year old prodigy knows what she’s doing.
Who inspires you musically?
So many artists! I know I can’t name them all but right now: Zimmer90, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, Raye, quinnie, Zimmer90, Lennon Stella, Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Jungle, Maggie Rogers. I could go on and on!
How is Teeth similar to some of your past music such as Same People? How is it different?
While Teeth is another sad song from me, it’s the first song I’ve released that is about me and no one else. It’s not about a breakup or a falling out or a friend. It’s truly about zooming out and reflecting on my life and my mental health. Same People will forever hold a special place in my heart, but it’s a piano ballad. Teeth is way bigger production wise, we (Ella Boh, my producer/co writer, and I) played with big sonic moments, adding lots of textures, including children laughing, gang vocals, etc.
Word ‘round industry campfire has it that you have a very special project in the works for 2024 entitled 2019; kudos and accolades! Can you give our ever-inquisitive readers a hint or three as to what 2019 is all about?
All the rumors are TRUE. I’m so excited to release my EP 2019 this year. Let’s just say I had an abundance of heartbreak in 2019. My whole life turned upside down. I touch on everything from my personal life, love life, and work life. I wrote the songs I really needed to hear that year, but couldn’t find, in hopes I could help someone else going through it.
You hail from Ohio and now count Los Angeles as home. How do those seemingly disparate roots inform the sound and energy of your music?
I am such a culmination of the cities I’ve lived in. Growing up in Cleveland I was always listening to music by the lake and playing lots of acoustic songs. I spent six years after that in Nashville, TN. There I learned the value and adapted the art of storytelling into my own music. Press forward to now in Los Angeles, I’m constantly challenging myself to find the strongest production and melodies to help tell the story.
In the wake of the release of Teeth, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit in the coming weeks and months?
I would love to make more shows happen! Right now the priority is getting back in the studio for myself and other artists. I actually just got back from writing at Coachella this week and I’m heading to Norway next week to make songs on the coast! In the meantime, I’m treating social media as my stage. That way I can reach more people from all over the world until I start touring in person.
As a singer and songwriter, which generally tends to come to you first while working on new material: The music or the lyrics?
For me it’s always lyrics and rhythms. I love having a concept to build around first and then tend to find the sonic and melodic backdrop for the story to live in.
At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a-spin to your beautiful new single Teeth?
When people listen to Teeth my hope is that they will be reminded that even though life can look perfect on social media, we never truly know what people are going through behind closed doors. I hope it encourages listeners to be extra kind not only to others, but most importantly to themselves. <3
