Indie-folk artist Gileah Taylor Releases New Song “My Vision is Coming Back”

Today we are pleased to join forces with Gileah Taylor for the premiere of her new single “My Vision is Coming Back,” a gorgeous piano-pop ballad about overcoming depression and making the most of this life we have. “You don’t get back wasted days / But sometimes you need to rest / I’ve rested for the better part of a year / Now I can feel my vision coming back,” Gileah sings over orchestral swells. This song of hope allows us to be a witness to this new chapter in her life.

About the song, Taylor comments, “When I wrote “My Vision is Coming Back,” I was coming to the end of a season of intense sadness, although I didn’t realize it at the time. A lot of my lyrics on this record are like motivational talks I give to myself – this song especially. I truly felt lost for a while, and it felt like I was at sea desperate for there to be an end to the sadness, to see land on the horizon instead of the endless waves. I remember sitting at the piano and feeling around the keys for a melody, and with the first line I basically told myself that it’s okay to cry, but let’s look for the light at the same time. It begins with “Blink hard oh salt-stung eyes.” I can still feel that moment when I sing those words.

I used a melody on this song that at first wasn’t quite familiar to me. At the end of the chorus I sing, “Gulls low-flying / Pale dunes rising / My vision is coming back,” and I borrowed a Celtic sounding musical lift on the word rising. My producers, Gideon Klein and Gabe Klein, set the tone for the record with the music, since this is the first song on the record. Gideon wrote the string parts and there are layers of those gorgeous strings along with Gabe’s beautifully understated drums and synth lines.

My favorite lyric for this song is, “You don’t get back wasted days, but sometimes you need to rest.” I felt that when I wrote it. I had many wasted days under my belt. I’m glad I reminded myself that I needed to rest, because when I look back on this time I recognize that I truly did need to rest in order for my vision to come back.

Scotland is such a beautiful country and I’m lucky I got the chance to ride a bicycle (an assist bike, because wow those hills!) from Helensburgh to Dunbar. That experience reminded me to find joy in simple things, like watching the waves in a loch, or the waves of grass in a field being blown by westerly winds, and realizing how absolutely delightful life can be.”
