Graduating from music school during the pandemic years, Dom Quincey set about establishing himself within the industry, with his independent approach and dreamy music steadily garnering attention. The West London-born artist navigates themes of coming of age, love and loss, with a sound full of hazy nostalgia and warmth.
Dom’s most recent single ‘Before My Eyes’ channels his ethereal songwriting abilities. The artist arranges an array of soft, distant piano melodies, lacing the evocative chords with a slight lo-fi sensibility, blending the intimacy of bedroom pop with vast and dynamic production. Building his reserved vocal performance into a monumental climax from the very first moments, Dom creates a sound that cascades through gorgeous distortion and roaring layers of instrumental melodies, conjuring an affecting rise of passion in the listener.
Dom dives into the track, “‘Before My Eyes’ is essentially a song about the yearning that comes in the wake of losing a loved one very suddenly. I started working on ideas for the song a couple of years ago, but it didn’t find its true meaning until after I experienced a traumatic loss. It’s the most vulnerable song I have put out.”
Dom is a product of classical and contemporary music with influences ranging from James Blake to Frank Ocean, Jeff Buckley, and Elliot Smith. As Dom best describes it,
“This track feels different for me as it reflects an entirely raw expression of myself. Sonically, I wanted the song to reflect a journey of emotions. The track starts in a fragile place with minimal production in the verse and eventually builds to a crescendo of complex feelings in the climax. I want people to use the song as an outlet for their interpretation of loss. It can be just as much about the loss of romantic love as it can be about grief.”
