INTERVIEW: Alejandra Belén

1.) Were very happy to be speaking today with acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Alejandra Belén; greetings and salutations, Alejandra! Before we meander down the proverbial Q&A musical pathway, how is 2024 treating you and yours thus far?

2024 has been a year of profound reflection and boundless creativity for me and my loved ones. It’s a year where every challenge becomes a canvas for resilience and every moment becomes an opportunity to infuse art into life. This year continues to unfold with the promise of inspiration, allowing me to explore new depths of my artistry and to connect with audiences in meaningful ways.

2.) Major congratulations on your beautiful new Latin Spoken Word single La vida es a cada latido! Starting at the top, can you talk with us about how this gem of a ditty came into being?

“La vida es a cada latido” emerged from a place of deep introspection and a desire to encapsulate the essence of life’s rhythm in verse and melody.

This single is a natural progression from the poem within my book, now brought to life through the universal language of music. It symbolizes a journey of self-discovery and the realization that magic lies in being true to oneself and valuing our personal narratives and experiences.

3.) Latin Grammy Winning producer Agustín Espina did the producing honors on La vida es a cada latido. What was it like collaborating with Agustín on this track?

Collaborating with Agustín was nothing short of transformative. His profound understanding of musicality and his intuitive grasp of how to blend spoken word with the compelling force of symphonic rock created an environment ripe for artistic exploration. Agustín’s expertise not only elevated the piece but also allowed me to delve deeper into my creative psyche, resulting in a work that we’re both immensely proud of.

4.) In your opinion, what differentiates La vida es a cada latido from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?

“La vida es a cada latido” distinguishes itself in the 2024 music scene through its innovative integration of spoken word poetry with music, offering a narrative depth and emotional resonance that is rare in contemporary songs. This track is a vivid example of how spoken word poetry can amplify the emotive power of music, transforming the listening experience into a deeply personal journey for each audience member.

Moreover, this single stands out for its adventurous fusion of genres. It weaves together the raw emotional grit of alternative and classic rock with the grandeur of symphonic elements. Looking ahead, there’s even the exciting possibility of exploring disco influences, reflecting my love for the nostalgia of the 90s.

5.) The accompanying music video for La vida es a cada latido is a thing of beauty – Thank you! Can you talk about what went into the making of the music video and who some of the artists were that contributed to the making of it?

The creation of the music video for “La vida es a cada latido” was a vibrant collaborative effort that united an array of talented artists.

Colombian actresses Carolina Lizarazo and Mariana Belén, along with Venezuelan actor Willy Martin, gave life to the song’s narrative through their compelling performances. Visual artist and producer Elizabeth Lugo not only shaped the video’s aesthetic vision but also stepped in front of the camera, contributing her acting skills to the project. Venezuelan musicians Velaviee and Wizzmer further enriched the video by appearing on screen, demonstrating their artistic versatility and deepening the connection between the music and its visual representation.

6.) Who are some of your music influences?

Answering who my musical influences are is always a challenging question because there are so many artists who have touched my life and work in profound ways. However, among my most significant influences are the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Nightwish, AC/DC, Beth Hart, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Jim Morrison, among others.

Each of these artists and bands, in their own unique way, has contributed to the fabric of my musical identity. They’ve inspired me

with their innovation, emotional depth, and ability to transcend the ordinary, pushing me to explore the limitless possibilities within my own music and poetry.

7.)  With the release of the mesmerizing new single, can fans look forward to more music from you as 2024 marches on?

Absolutely, the release of “La vida es a cada latido” is just the beginning. I am currently working  on more music that continues to explore the fusion of poetry and sound, aiming to release an EP that promises to be a rich tapestry of narratives, melodies, and rhythms.

8.)  In the wake of the release of La vida es a cada latido, what does your touring/performing dance card look like in the coming weeks and months?

Currently, there are no specific dates set for touring as the promotion of my book “La vida es a cada latido” is taking precedence. The plan is to allow the book to truly take flight, to let its message resonate widely before bringing its essence to life through live performances.

The intention is to musicalize the message of the book, creating a series of live presentations that not only showcase the music but also the poetry and stories behind them. This approach ensures that when the time comes for live performances, the audience will have a deeper connection and understanding of the work, making each show a more meaningful and immersive experience.

9.) You can rightfully boast both family ties to Colombia and Venezuela. How do those seemingly disparate roots inform you as an artist and as a person?

My roots in Colombia and Venezuela are the bedrock of my identity as an artist and individual. They inform my worldview, imbuing my work with a rich tapestry of cultural narratives, a deep sense of community, and an enduring resilience. These roots ground me in tradition while inspiring me to explore and innovate within my artistic endeavors.

10.) Are you actively working on another volume of poetry? Is poetry something which you will always have a hand in either privately or publicly?

Poetry is the soul of my artistic expression—it’s where my journey began and a realm I will always return to. I am indeed working on another volume of poetry, and whether privately or publicly, poetry remains my most authentic form of communication with the world.

11.) Any final thoughts you might like to share with fans and readers about your new single La vida es a cada latido?

This single represents more than just a song; it’s an invitation to live fully, to embrace the entirety of our experiences with openness and courage. “La vida es a cada latido” is a reminder that we  are the composers of our own lives, and it’s up to us to infuse every moment with meaning, love,  and beauty. I hope this song encourages listeners to celebrate their unique rhythms of life.
