Free Whenever, the trailblazing instrumental psych band, have just released their much-anticipated single, “Calypso.” Following songs “Sicily” and “Precipice”, this single is the third glimpse into their upcoming self-titled studio album, promising a sonic journey that transcends genres and defies musical boundaries.
Rooted in the ancient practice of long-form improvisation, Free Whenever’s music effortlessly navigates the realms between form (saguna) and formlessness (nirguna). The band’s philosophy has shaped a unique blend of vintage psychedelia, dub reggae, eastern modality, and African rhythmic traditions, creating a mesmerizing and synesthetic sound experience for listeners.
“Calypso,” the third single from their upcoming self-titled album, showcases Free Whenever’s signature vibe-setting music taken to new heights. It is a psychedelic and percussive dance song with a toe-tapping four-on-the-floor beat, driving bass groove, and emotive guitar.
Having already garnered attention from a growing worldwide fanbase with five releases over a two-year period and appearances on Earmilk, Psychedelic Baby Magazine, and Apple Music’s editorial playlist “Evergreen” and “Soul Revival”, Free Whenever has evolved from a humble bedroom recording setup to a full-fledged live act. Founding members Trevor LaVecchia and Neil Guleria have expanded the band to include live contributor Brendan Steuart on drums, enabling them to bring their psychedelic groove music from the streets of Manhattan to world-class venues such as the Sultan Room and Brooklyn Bowl. They have even shared the stage with notable artists like Karina Rykman.
The release of “Calypso” marks the continuation of Free Whenever’s exciting journey leading up to their self-titled studio album.
