Around these here parts, we’ve been rabid Eugene Levy aficionados ever since we first caught sight of him in the 1983 comedy National Lampoon’s Vacation. In that film, Levy played a slick, jive-talkin’ used car salesman trying to get a fast one over on perennial family man Chevy Chase (Spoiler Alert: He succeeds) and, with very minimum screen time, he managed to make an oversized impression. From that point on, this Hamilton County, Canada native and Second City Television alum has brought the oversized laughs from everything to American Pie, Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show and – ye olde scribbler’s personal fave – Waiting For Guffman. His unique brand of Borscht Belt comedy is relatable to the everyman and perhaps that’s why right out of the gate the freshman Apple travelog reality series The Reluctant Traveler has been a bonafide hit with television watchers.
If you’ve not yet checked out The Reluctant Traveler, the setup is simple enough: Levy travels to some of the more noteworthy hotels which dot the ever-lovin’ globe. As he checks out the hotels, he also looks into the local cultures which give these establishments so much of their local flavor.
Our Jack Kerouac-admiring pals over at the ever-traveling Hollywood Reporter have given us all the very welcome news that the Eugene Levy-led reality series The Reluctant Traveler is being greenlit for a second season. The sophomore season will showcase the comedian/actor in such out-of-the-way European locales as Andalusia, Spain and Sylt, Germany, eschewing some of the more metropolitan areas such as Berlin or Madrid.
So what are Levy’s thoughts about what viewers will see in season 2 of The Reluctant Traveler?
“This was an interesting season,” said Levy of the new slate of episodes which are airing now. “We’re doing Europe. I think I’m getting a little better — meaning more comfortable being on camera, because it was an odd feeling last year for me. I’ve never done this sort of thing before. I’m a character actor, so I put on some makeup and, anybody but me, I’d be comfortable in front of a camera. So that was a tough thing for me when we started the show: how am I going to do on it? And, am I going to be helping the show or not?”
“I’m more comfortable this year. I got comfortable last year, but now it’s almost become like second nature. I can be myself without working too hard at it. I think we have some great locations, and it’s off-the-beaten-track kind of Europe that I think people don’t get a chance to see that often. That’s a big plus.”
Season Two of Apple’s The Reluctant Traveler premiered on March 8; check it out!
