JWC shares of the song:
“I write most songs very autobiographically (sometimes too much so) but some of my favorite tunes are ones where I let go of reality just a little bit; starting with a moment from my life, and letting my imagination run.
This song started with the idea and the lyric, followed by the chorus’ syncopated strumming pattern on acoustic guitar. I’d been listening to some 80’s and 80’s-inspired music, so I felt like that syncopated rhythm lent itself to some electric guitar and synth hits, which helped enhance the fun, playful nature of the song. I’m a huge fan of the Dire Straits so I channeled my inner Mark Knopfler for the lead riff, and just followed the fun-compass all the way.
Folks might wonder just how true-to-life the song is, and I think that’s part of the fun ;)”
Capistran’s musical odyssey commenced at the age of 12 when his father introduced him to the guitar, igniting a passion for songwriting that would shape his artistic trajectory. Despite initial challenges stemming from shyness and vocal insecurities, Capistran persevered, honing his craft through high school bands and college endeavors, notably as part of the Boston-based band Geometrist.
A pivotal moment arose with Capistran’s relocation to Portland nearly a decade ago, prompting him to embrace the spotlight under his own name. This decision marked a harmonious balance between his affinity for folk-driven storytelling and his penchant for electrifying indie pop-rock performances, setting the stage for a captivating musical journey.
Capistran’s eclectic influences span an extensive spectrum of genres and artists, from punk and rock icons like Blink 182 and Green Day to folk troubadours such as M. Ward and Elliott Smith. Drawing inspiration from a diverse musical landscape, his sound seamlessly intertwines elements of indie pop rock with folk and soul undertones, resulting in a genre-defying sonic tapestry.
As a lyricist, Capistran delves into the intricacies of the human experience, infusing his songs with autobiographical narratives and existential ponderings. His latest single, “Pretty,” released today, encapsulates his penchant for blending reality with imagination, weaving a tale that resonates with infectious energy and playful charm.
As Capistran prepares to unveil his upcoming album, “PURE JOY,” in Spring 2024, anticipation mounts for another chapter in his musical odyssey—a testament to authenticity, creativity, and the enduring power of indie pop rock.
“Pretty” is now available for streaming and download on all major platforms.
