Ben Affleck has always been a consistently good actor, journeying from one film production to another and turning in memorable performances in such movies as Chasing Amy, Good Will Hunting, Argo, Shakespeare In Love, Armageddon, Justice League, AIR, and The Tender Bar. But it’s the Berkeley, California native’s turn in 2016’s The Accountant which seemed to put him in a whole other league altogether, one of not just action, but actual thought behind that action.
If you haven’t already had the pleasure of checking this clever thriller out, The Accountant is about a math nut by the name of Christian Wolff (ably essayed by Affleck) whose love of numbers has made him a social misfit. Not helping matters on the whole making friends front for Mr. Wolff? He’s using his talent with mathematics to act as an accountant for some pretty shifty organized crime characters. Naturally things get even stickier from there for Affleck as he lands upon a slight discrepancy to the tune of millions of dollars from one of his clients. Before you can say “professional hit”, bodies start materializing left and right around our troubled protagonist and the tension, not to mention the action, ratchets up to an extreme degree.
According to our Phantoms aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck is set to reprise his role as Christian Wolff in an upcoming sequel to The Accountant after being long-in-development (since 2017).
So what do we know about The Accountant 2 (not the actual title that we’re aware of; consider it a best guess on the part of ye writer in lieu of an official announcement from the studio and leave it at that)? Not a whole lot, but what we got we want to share with you, Dear and Constant Reader.
Returning for second helpings in the sequel to The Accountant are Affleck, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. Alas, Anna Kendrick who was such a big part in the original film will not be returning for more fun and games. Director of the first film Gavin O’Connor is also back to helm the whole thing, and for extra-good luck, original scribe Bill Dubuque is returning to write the screenplay.
According to the handy-dandy official logline from Amazon (the studio releasing The Accountant 2 after Warners passed up the chance to do the sequel), the plot really thickens in this sophomore outing: “When her former boss is killed by unknown assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson) is forced to contact Christian Wolff (Affleck) to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Bernthal), Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive — all intent on putting a stop to their search.”
No official release date for The Accountant 2, but you can bet your proverbial CPA that we’ll keep everyone up-to-date on this eagerly anticipated sequel; stay tuned!
