INTERVIEW: TAGO

Tago, welcome to VENTS! What’s the story behind your latest single, D.A.M.N?

“D.A.M.N.” was created at a point in my life where I was going through a lot of trials and tribulations while trying to make it in the music industry. Life was also hitting too hard at that time which led to me feeling like “DAMN” and then I went to the studio and that’s how “D.A.M.N.” was created.

What impact do you hope your message of resilience and enlightenment has on your audience?

I hope that by listening to “D.A.M.N” people will have that inner drive to continue to persevere through life’s changes. Every person on this planet was created for a reason, so be determined and motivated in anything that you are trying to achieve, live purposefully like it is your last day to live, learn and grow from lessons, and always always remain close to God.

How do you stay true to yourself in an industry which is constantly changing and favouring those who will fall in line with trends?

I run my own race and at a pace that’s comfortable to me, I’m not rushing to be on top of new trends everyday, it’s impossible to keep up. I learn something new and grow everyday so you could say I’m constantly changing along with the industry. I feel like if you keep growing you will never get left behind and always stay on trend.

What future goals do you have for your music, especially in terms of its impact on listeners?

I want my music to inspire and change the world, I hope that when people listen to me it encourages them to be the best and highest versions of themselves. I want people to know that authenticity is the only path to honest living and by hearing my music they learn to love themselves and be their true selves.

How has your relationship with music changed since you first started to learn the ropes of music production?

Music and I have a love-hate relationship. I love being an Artist and Producer most of the time and other times I don’t. I try to live and not be indulged in music 24/7 because it can get to be overwhelming and feel like a job. In the beginning of my career I lived, slept, ate, and breathed music, and I still do, but now I try to just breathe and take my time with it so I maintain my passion and love for  the music.

What does your creative process typically look like?

Since I’m an Artist and Producer, people probably think I’m in the studio recording and cooking up all the time, but I don’t. I find inspiration in all things so I just go about the day living, it could be a car horn beeping, a can that hit the floor, or a bird tweeting that piques my interest. From there I will hear that sound in my head all day, and now I think of how I can make that same sound in production. Then starts the beat making process. I like to create things from scratch (no loops or melodies) and I slowly begin to build the beat. Depending on how complex or simple I want the production to be, that could determine whether it takes me 30 minutes, 3 hours, or 3 days to finish the production. Usually when I’m making the production I think of what I would sound like on the track, and start writing lyrics from there and try to catch a cadence of some sort. I like to be prepared before I go to the studio so I write and rehearse everything over and over again probably for like a couple of days and then I go to record it in the studio. Since I’ve already practised and rehearsed the record I can usually go in the studio and record fast and it usually takes a couple hours. My creative process is like a flower, it begins as a little bud but blooms into something beautiful overtime.

You’ve collaborated with your fair share of influential artists, what have you learned from these experiences, and have they shaped your sound?

I’ve learned that relationships mean everything. Working with other artists is best when the vibe is there because that’s how the hits are made. Being locked in with the artist is best because you’re able to create a sound that an artist wants rather than just sending beats in an email that they might hop on or not. I would say life and experience is what shapes my sound in music. When I am going through hard times in life I create “Pain” music, when I’m at a good point in life I create inspirational music, it really just depends on where I’m at in my life that determines what my sound will be.

What’s next for Tago?

Hmmm…I don’t want to say too much because then that would spoil the surprise. I will say though that I have a bunch of unreleased projects that I’m working on at the moment, stay tuned.
