INTERVIEW: Rachel Maxann

  1. We’re excited to be speaking today with acclaimed vocal chanteuse Rachel Maxann; greetings and salutations, Rachel! Before we dive down the Q&A musical rabbit hole, how would you describe your musical stylings to the uninitiated who might just be discovering your incredible sound? We hear some sweet traces of blues and folk ourselves when we listen to your music!

I appreciate the kind words! My musical style is a fusion that draws from the roots of blues and folk, interwoven with soulful undertones. It’s a journey through various genres, reflecting my love for diverse sounds and the influence of different cultures.  I am also a huge advocate for mental health being a therapist myself, so I hope that my music creates a cathartic experience!  My favorite quote that describes my music these days is “Memphis Soul meets intimate folk”

  1. Major congratulations on your powerhouse new single The Tides which is set to roll out this March 4! Starting at the tip-top, can you talk a little about what inspired you to cast your magical spell on this gem of a ditty?

Thank you so much! “The Tides” is a musical enchantment inspired by the ebb and flow of love. It delves into the dynamic nature of relationships, embracing the highs and lows. The song captures the essence of resilience and the transformative power of navigating through the tides of emotions. Crafting this piece allowed me to weave a spell that invites listeners to connect with their own journeys, making it a heartfelt and magical musical experience.

  1. Who served as your producer on The Tides and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio while working on the new tune?

So this song has been on quite a journey! I wrote the song in my living room here in Memphis, with my dog Freddie laying next to me. A month or so late I was in St.Louis performing  with the Black Opry, and I premiered the song. The next day I recorded the song with Don Bailey over at Lonnie’s Farm recording. He had has just gotten a Danelectro Vintage 12 String, and graciously let me try it out. Later when I was home, though I liked that recording it had evolved since the time I was in St. Louis-so I recorded it again with my long time friend and producer Doug Walker at The Swerve Workshop. Finally I got my band together, and recorded one more version! Annnnd I did a live filmed version with my violinist and cello as well. Clearly I love this song .

  1. In your humble opinion, what differentiates The Tides from the Distinguished Competition on the 2024 music scene?

Haha well, “The Tides” distinguishes itself by embracing a fusion of blues, folk, and soul, creating a unique sonic landscape. I believe the song’s strength lies in its ability to transcend genres and connect with listeners on a deep, personal level. The authenticity of the storytelling, combined with the eclectic musical elements, sets it apart from the competition, offering a fresh and distinctive voice in the 2024 music scene.

  1. In the wake of the March 4 release of The Tides, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?

Not exactly a tour so much as a few different places people can catch me starting with here in Memphis at the legendary Hernandos Hideaway, in Austin for a few SXSW showcases, and then Wolftrap, VA with the Bladk Opry!

  1. Who inspires you musically?

I draw immense inspiration from the emerging black folk musicians who courageously push artistic boundaries. Their creativity fuels my passion and motivates me to explore new dimensions within my own music. It’s an encouraging community, and witnessing the innovation of fellow artists is a constant source of inspiration that propels me forward on my musical path.

  1. With the release of the beautiful new single, will an EP or LP release be too far behind? Is this something that fans can look for in 2024?

Absolutely! I’m excited to share that I’m currently working on a new EP, and my goal is to release it by fall 2024. This collection of music will further explore the themes and diverse influences present in “The Tides,” offering fans a deeper and more immersive human experience. Stay tuned!

  1. You’re based out of the thriving burg of Memphis, Tennessee. How do those stomping grounds inform the energy and vibe of your music?

Being based in Memphis, Tennessee infuses my music with the vibrant energy and soul of this iconic city. The rich musical history, especially in soul, blues, and country, has a profound impact on my sound. The rhythmic beats of Memphis, the soulful undertones, and the cultural tapestry of the city all play a role in shaping the unique vibe of my music. It’s an ever-present influence that adds depth and authenticity to my sound, creating a connection to the musical legacy of this thriving musical city!

  1. Along with being a phenomenal music talent, you’re also a respected therapist and activist. Can you talk a little about these two other passions and how they might inform the music which you create?

Certainly! Being a therapist and activist deeply influences my music. Through therapy, I connect with the human experience, exploring emotions and stories that find their way into my songwriting. As an activist, I use my voice as a platform to address social issues and advocate for positive change. These dual passions shape a holistic approach to my art, allowing me to express the complexities of the human experience and hopefully contribute to meaningful conversations through my music. It’s a symbiotic relationship where my roles as a therapist and activist enrich the depth and purpose of the music I create.

10. When working on new material, what does your creative process generally look like? Is there a real method to the creative madness?

Absolutely! My creative process involves an immersive blend of crafting both music and lyrics simultaneously.  For me, this allows for an organic and cohesive expression of the emotions and stories I aim to convey. Once I’m finished with the song, I may bring the song to my producer or my band for their own flair and embellishments!

11. Any final thoughts you might like to share with fans and readers regarding your beautiful new single The Tides which is set to be released on March 4?

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the listeners and readers for their support and enthusiasm for “The Tides.” This song is a piece of my soul, and I hope it resonates with you in a profound way. The journey through creating this single has been a labor of love, and I can’t wait for you to experience it. Your connection means the world to me, and I hope “The Tides” becomes a soundtrack to moments in your own lives.
