Formed by Brooklyn-born Krieger and Norwegian Erik Laroi in 2006, The Formalist has evolved to deliver blends of ambient and electronic music, allowing it to lean towards song-based sensibilities. After recording their debut album in 2008, the duo waited over a decade to release it, until it was picked up by L.A. label Mother West in 2019.
In early 2024, the pair re-emerged with the single ‘Happenstance’, with the success of that release now followed by a new track ‘Finite’. Blending rich ambient layers with enticing percussive rhythms, The Formalist has crafted a single with a deeply explorative feel. As the sounds grow in intensity, the vocals stay in an ethereal contemplation, transcending beyond the agitated sound design of reversing synth and subtle acoustic arpeggios. As the track reaches its climax, the tension grows into a burning distortion that crashes over the music.
Laroi & Krieger share, “We think ‘Finite’ is in some ways the most personal or intimate song on the album. We were first writing it during that period of time in New York in early Covid, when people were worried about what could happen. It was a fragile time, and it was like everyone in New York felt like they were at risk of losing people, or had lost someone.”
