Over the last 100+ years, moviegoers have been thrilling to the nefarious misdeeds of the King of Vampires, Count Dracula. Hitting the ground running with 1921’s silent Austrian offering Dracula’s Death (now sadly lost to the vagaries of time, alas), folks who plunk their hard-earned greenbacks down for movie tickets just can’t seem to get enough of this Bram Stoker-created monster (though, to be fair, Stoker did actually base his Dracula off of a very real individual; that’s another article). During that century of bloodletting, many-an actor has donned the regal and flowing cloak of the Prince of Darkness including the likes of Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr, Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, Frank Langella, Jack Palance, George Hamilton and Udo Kier. After all of those many versions of the Transylvanian Count, one might wonder which enterprising thespian might possibly carry on the fanged tradition going forward. Well, rest easy, Dear and Constant Readers of the Night: According to our pals over at Bloody Disgusting, a new actor to portray Count Dracula has been unearthed and – lucky ducky you! – we’ve got all of the gory details baked right into this column!
The latest actor to don fangs and assume the storied mantle of Count Dracula in an upcoming motion picture from director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) has been found after an intensive search: Caleb Landry Jones of Antiviral fame has been tapped to portray Dracula, according to sources. Jones previously worked with Besson in his last film Dogman.
Though director Francis Ford Coppola did a corker of a job in giving audiences a slight glimpse of the dark origins of the Big Kahuna of all vampires in his 1992 flick Dracula, it sounds as if Luc Besson will attempt to go the Peggy Sue Got Married helmer one better by devoting even more screen time to this murky backstory in his own upcoming movie which will see Jones slide into a tuxedo and haunt the good folks of 18th Century London. Word ‘round industry campfire has it that, among other things, the new film will focus on the very beginnings of Dracula’s life as well as take a deep-dive into his marriage. Alos apparently signing up for this new film will be Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (as Drac adversary Professor Van Helsing perhaps?)
The character of Dracula always seems to be with us, having just recently completed yet another cinematic outing in last year’s middling box-office trifle The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
No word on an actual release date for the newest Dracula, but we’ll keep everyone up-to-date on this intriguing-sounding production!
