INTERVIEW: Sugarcane Jane

How would you classify your music?

Wide-ranging, cross-genre pollinating Folk Rock

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Anthony Crawford:

Tony Rice

Goose creek symphony

Buck Owens

Glenn Campbell

George Harrison

Savana Lee:

The Beatles

The Everly Brothers

Simon & Garfunkel

Lucinda Williams

Sheryl Crow

What do you want fans to take from your music?

A copy of the vinyl and cd and hat.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

Very active. We live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.

The world comes to us. Travelers from all over the globe come to enjoy the beautiful beaches, seafood, and world-class singer-songwriters.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

Anthony Crawford:

Im not much about going to concerts.

Being that I have toured the world with iconic artists, I am accustomed to being on the stage, and Im uncomfortable in large crowds. I love golf, but if I’m not actually playing, I dont care to walk around watching someone else play.

I know I sound selfish; however, Ive learned to be true to myself.

Savana Lee:

I had second-row center stage tickets to see Simon & Garfunkel at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with The Everly Brothers as special guests.  The Everly Brothers’ family was all sitting in the front row.  It was a magical night.

I love the unpredictability of playing LIVE.  The crowd interaction.  Watching Anthony perform is always exciting…you never know what he’ll do.  It’s spontaneous and real.  I love it!

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

Anthony Crawford:

There are 2 songs that I wrote in the same few hours that relate to finding the love of my life.

Spirit Push

Last day

Savana is my game-changer. She has mystical qualities that Ive never experienced with anyone else. After 14 years of marriage and 3 kids, Im still in love with her as I felt the first day I saw her. This is true. Not a made-up answer. We just fit together like great loves do.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

I’ve learned to focus more on my craft and less on what’s going on in the world. Concentrate more on the things I enjoy.  Life is short, and I’ve lost way too many friends.  Some have died, and some just went their separate ways.  It has changed me.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Didnt Jesus play a little Guitar?

Im very interested in him because he said a lot of good things to live by.

What’s next for you?

Headed to California in May to play the Strawberry festival in Grass Valley.

Will have quality alone time with my best friend/ wife/ band mate.

We need the time to unwind.
