So, Like, The Grim Archie Shows Are Weird

I like Archie comics, I suppose. I mean, I wouldn’t call myself a big fan, or say they are particularly good, but I do buy the digests and they are fun to flip through. Mostly I like the art style, and it’s funny to go through years of Archie comics in a book. The universe of Riverdale is fun. Maybe like a third of the comics in any digest are actually good, a third are amusing in an ironic way, and a third aren’t good or funny at all. All that said, I’d like to see an Archie-verse TV show that actually feels like the Archie comics you find in the digests.

I know there have been Archie shows, including recently. Honestly, I was struck to think about this because I tried to watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. I couldn’t finish an episode. The pilot dragged. It was fun for, like, 10 minutes, and then the returns diminished swiftly. I’ve never even bothers with Riverdale. I could tell it was not going to be up my alley. These shows are trying to be teen soaps, all sultry and faux sordid and melodramatic. It’s just silly, and not in the way Archie comics are silly.

How about a brightly-colored show set in Riverdale? What about, you know, a comedy? An Archie sitcom? Let the characters be goofy. Let Betty and Veronica fight over Archie. Let Jughead eat hamburgers. Give me Dilton and Moose and Mr. Weatherbee. You know, maybe I should go back and watch the old Sabrina show with Melissa Joan Hart. That might be what I’m looking for.
