Netflix Sets Release Date for “Ripley” Series, Reveals Trailer

Back in 1999, master filmmaker Anthony Minghella brought to the silver screen a twisty and altogether dark and sumptuous adaptation of author Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Part travelog (ah, Italy!) and part thriller (our main protagonist just happens to be an extremely likable yet deeply disturbed sociopath), this film had it all: A director fresh off of his award-winning turn with The English Patient, a cadre of actors on every casting agent’s “It” list (Matt Damon, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow and Philip Seymour Hoffman) not to mention some of the most striking and evocative camera work from cinematographer John Seale. The film has aged well and the only regret among more staunch movie lovers is that Minghella and Co. didn’t have the opportunity to turn this puppy into a bonafide (and incredibly dark) movie franchise. You see, Highsmith wrote no less than five Ripley novels, each one ratcheting up the ‘Will Tom Ripley get away with his machinations this time around?’ conversation. As much as I loved Damon in the Bourne series of films, I would have given my left eyeteeth to see him continue on in subsequent Ripley films. That boat may have already sailed, yet if Netflix has its way, perhaps we might yet get that full adaptation of all of Highsmith’s Ripley books…

From our Dexter Morgan muchachos over at Variety comes the news today that Netflix has announced the premiere date for their own take on author Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley character in the new series Ripley. Along with that date comes the very first trailer drop for the new show which you can check out right here.

Stepping into the dark shoes of Tom Ripley will be actor Andrew Scott (Fleabag, All of Us Strangers, Sherlock, 1917). The new series will be a retelling of The Talented Mr. Ripley and was written and directed by Steve Zaillian of The Irishman fame. Joining Scott will be fellow thespians Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn.

Ripley will premiere its entire eight episode season (with more to come, we can only hope) on Netflix this April 14!
