Betting on the Oscars: how predictable are the Academy Awards?

Betting is not only about sports or athletic events. It can also be about other facets of life like politics and entertainment, particularly when major events are taking place. One such event is no other than the Academy Awards, or simply enough, the Oscars.

Every year the best films of the world are coming to the spotlight, drawing worldwide attention in a ceremony that is watched by billions of people on the planet. Glamor meets art and people are waiting to see all the big stars and celebrities gather together in an event that is nothing like the other film festivals or competitions.

Which actor/actress is going to win the award for the leading role, who’s going to get the best supporting role, who will get the award for the best picture, directing, costume design, cinematography, film editing, original score, etc? Who’s gonna get most of the awards? Will there be a movie that will receive more awards than the record holder up to now? All these are questions that pop into the heads of every movie fan, every bettor interested in wagering on the biggest celebration of filmmaking and of course ever bookmaker, such as those listed at https://bettingmalaysia.online/, that wants to take a share of the big pie.

Betting on the Oscars has become very popular in the last decade or so. With the evolution of the internet and online betting sites being easily accessible by everyone who has access to the web (and of course everyone who is in a market where betting is legal), betting on the Academy Awards has emerged as one of the ‘must do’ things for punters.

Oscar betting is largely different from sports betting in Malaysia or anywhere else, and for this reason, everyone who wants to experiment with backing their favorite film, actor, director, or producer needs to take a rather different approach. Unlike sports where the final outcome of a game or even smaller within-game outcomes are unknown until they occur, the outcomes in the Academy Awards are finalized much before the presenter opens the envelope, voicing the famous “…and the Oscar goes to…”!

In sports, or even in other betting markets such as politics, for example, the winners emerge as a game comes to an end. The winners become winners the minute they are also announced to be the winners. On the contrary, the winners of the Oscars are known sometime before they are actually announced to the audience.

More to that, tt’s not like Oscars betting requires some sort of sophisticated predictive model – such as the AI-based models utilized for sports betting – which means that the early favorites don’t really change much unless something really striking happens. And what can be more striking than other awards?

Favorites in the Oscars have a very high win rate. Overall, in the most popular categories, like Best Picture, Actor/Actress in a Leading Role, Actor/Actress in a Supporting Role, Director, and Film Editing, the favorites get to go home with the Oscar. Surprises can always happen, but they are rarely the case for the specific event.

Statistics demonstrate that the favorites at the time of the announcement of the nominations retain their higher probability of winning the Oscar even as we are moving closer to the ceremony. The odds may fluctuate a bid, but overall they will continue to be the favs in most cases.

Some of the most significant factors affecting the bookmakers’ odds for Oscars markets are other awards that take place prior to the Academy Awards. For example, the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Movie Awards are two events that have a very high predictive ability of what will happen at the Oscars night.

Even though there might be a certain level of predictability at the Oscars, things can always go the other way. And the good thing is that experienced bettors are able to notice if something like that is going to happen. As we move closer to the Oscars ceremony, the nominees get to shape their odds. Usually, favorites’ odds are shortened the closer we are to the night, but this also happens for dark horses. Plenty of times underdogs have exhibited shortening odds and it has been this thing that revealed to the most experienced ones how the market is moving and how the probabilities have changed.

Overall, Oscars betting is not just as easy as it might sound. Yes, it is predictable and not so dynamic. Yes, there are a few things that you can do to get an informed bet (like following critics, etc). But, no there is nothing that can guarantee you a winning bet.
