Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall Set for Upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson Movie

American cinema had an amazing year in 1997 with such offerings as Good Will Hunting, Titanic, L.A. Confidential, The Game, Gattaca, Donnie Brasco, As Good As It Gets, Jackie Brown, Grosse Pointe Blank, Wag the Dog and Chasing Amy. But perhaps the crown jewel of banner movie releases that star-studded year was from a director few casual moviegoers had heard of up to that point, Paul Thomas Anderson. With his drop-the-mic tour de force motion picture epic Boogie Nights, the Hard Eight helmer turned a creative corner so sharp that it sent his star soaring into the stratosphere. In other words the film put him on the proverbial Hollywood map and allowed him to turn around and deliver more masterpieces such as Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, The Master, and There Will Be Blood. So many years have gone by since ‘97 and Anderson’s ode to the 1970’s/80’s porn world that many folks have forgotten – if they ever knew to begin with – that originally Leonardo DiCaprio had been offered the lead part in Boogie Nights. Few will argue that de facto choice Mark Wahlberg gave a performance for the ages, and DiCaprio didn’t do too badly either with the film he chose to do over Anderson’s, Jim Cameron’s Titanic. However, as time has marched on, many cinephiles have longed to see an honest-to-Pete on screen collaboration between DiCaprio and Anderson and for their parts, the two have always expressed a desire to eventually work together.

That day has arrived and, what’s more, Mr. DiCaprio is bringing some famous fellow thespians along for the big screen ride, according to our Licorice Pizza fans over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall will all be starring alongside one another in the upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson movie which is set to start production this very month.

Want more details, such as a film title and a plot? Afraid that’s all very Top Secret at the moment, as befitting a P.T. Anderson flick. What we can tell you is that Warner Bros. will be the home studio for the new film and that Anderson wrote the script himself. The film proper doesn’t necessarily sound like a starring vehicle for DiCaprio, but rather an ensemble piece. This makes sense if you’re at all familiar with other such creatures from Anderson’s kingdom like Boogie Nights and Magnolia.

Late in 2023 during the press circuit for Killers of the Flower Moon, DiCaprio announced that he might retire after his next film. Could this Anderson film be the actor’s swan song? We’ve heard tell that the This Boy’s Life star has been circling a role in Quentin Tarantino’s new film The Critic, so only time will tell.
