Gareth Dunlop has once again proven to be a master at self-confessional pop with enthralling new number “Church”,the stellar lead single of his upcoming third album “Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know”. Hailing from a singular piano note, the song closes its curtain with a euphoric combination of every instrument and voice used on the album, accompanied by angel-like choral vocals, layered sweeping synths and haunting delivery from Dunlopthat dynamically progresses.
“Church” evokes similar cinematic tendencies shown in earlier work yet lyrically seeks solace in a way we haven’t seen yet. Drawing in references to heaven and confessing to faith in his personal future, the track is separated into short verses, allowing the listener to gently take in Dunlop’s gradual realization of self-acceptance. Throughout, it appears to be harmonically progressing, yet spirals into an instrumental kaleidoscope that illustrates a sudden release of fear. It’s no wonder it was chosen as a sonic introduction and summary of “Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know” – for Dunlop, there was no question it was the lead single: “From the moment I finished writing it I knew I wanted it to be the first track on the record that pointed to everything that came after it.”
Nothing short of a shimmering addition to his moving discography, “Church” welcomes the listener to dive intothe singer-songwriter’s world and await what is to come.
