5 Tips to Look Professional and Still Stand Out as Unique

Maintaining your uniqueness while still presenting professionally can be challenging, especially when your need for self-expression involves creativity that gets colorful or a little wild.

For example, if you enjoy having colored hair, painted nails, or brightly-colored clothes, it’s not always possible to integrate that into your professional attire.

However, there are some ways you can be creative and unique while still maintaining a professional appearance.

1. Keep your nails somewhat calm at work

If you’re allowed to wear fake nails or nail polish to work, be creative but keep your nail art calm. For example, pink gel nails are somewhat neutral, and you can still get creative with your designs by adding simple art, like flowers or stars. There are a lot of cool nail art styles that look fantastic with pink gel nail polish, so try some out and see what you can create.

Avoid going to the extreme with super long fake nails or loud, bright colors unless you work in a profession where maintaining a dynamic personal style is part of your job. For example, if you hold a position where you constantly connect with customers in person and they enjoy your unique personality, you might be able to maintain a professional presence even with loud or brightly colored nails. It could work in your favor in this case.

However, if you’re sitting behind a desk or required to meet with clients in a very serious manner, skip the loud colors and designs and just keep it simple.

2. Get clarification before testing your limits on work dress codes

You might be tempted to test the limits of your company’s dress code to see just how far you can go with your creative ideas and unique expressions. This is probably a bad idea and it’s better to ask for clarification before trying anything. Ask your supervisor if you can wear what you’re thinking about wearing, and if they aren’t sure, bring the clothing item in and show them. If they still aren’t sure, get an opinion from a higher up, and don’t test your limits without an explicit positive affirmation.

For example, if your dress code allows you to dress casually every Friday, don’t assume that “casual” means you can wear anything you want. If you want to wear a bright pink fuzzy sweater, for instance, that might push the limits of “casual” too far. It really depends on your company and the owner or CEO, so always ask ahead of time.

3. Try adding patterns to your wardrobe

Some simple patterns can go a long way to make you stand out from the crowd. If you’re trying to create a professional appearance and be unique at the same time, try adding some patterns to your standard wardrobe. There are plenty of professional clothing items that are patterned, and if you search hard enough, you’ll find the right combination. For instance, patterned blouses are easy to find and so are button-down shirts. You probably don’t want to get trousers with a pattern, but if you wear skirts, patterns can work well.

The only challenge with patterns is making sure your entire outfit matches. Some patterns clash, so you may want to consider only using a pattern on a top or bottom and not both. You could get an outfit that is made to match entirely, but fully patterned outfits tend to look a bit over the top.

4. Stay comfortable

When you’re on a mission to be unique while remaining professional, it’s tempting to wear clothes that don’t feel comfortable. Don’t forget that part of what makes you stand out as unique is how you feel in your clothes because your confidence and attitude will be noticed.

Unfortunately, people do judge others based on the clothes they wear, but you can find a compromise between style and comfort. Not everyone will judge you poorly for being unique, but what matters most is how you feel in the clothes you choose to wear.

5. Use embellishments and textures

If you can’t go too far with your actual outfits, try adding an embellishment to your shirt or jacket, like a pin, dressy buttons, a necklace, or even a fancy handbag. You can also try clothes that have fringe, various textures, or look monochromatic.

Professional doesn’t have to be boring

Being unique sometimes clashes with a professional presentation, but that doesn’t mean you have to be boring. Add a little style to your wardrobe with the tips in this article, and make a statement while maintaining a professional presentation.
