Apple just made a whole slew of Gary Oldman fans very happy – not to mention those who enjoy thoughtful and well-produced television – with their announcement today (as reported by our Fresh Horses admirers over at The Hollywood Reporter) that they’ve officially renewed the drama series Slow Horses for a fifth season. The renewal comes as no surprise for anyone that’s been following the five-time nominated BAFTA series.
From the get-go, we knew that Slow Horses had to be something pretty special if no less of an Oscar-winning talent as Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) was going to commit to the daily grind of an episodic television series. This spy drama focuses on an oddball assemblage of British intelligence agents who toil away in a more practical version of The X-Files. Except, instead of little gray men and ghosts and ghoulies, this series and the group proper deals with more tangible things such as espionage and betrayal. Their little corner of the world is not so-nicely referred to as ‘Slough House’ and, in the three seasons of the series thus far, viewers have been treated to some of the most clever and well-written group of protagonists and Big Bads to drop on the television landscape in eons. Giving credit where it’s due, the television proceedings would not be possible without its source material, the Slough House series of books from author Mick Herron.
Season 3 of Slow Horses recently tied up its various and sundry storylines and season 4 had already been greenlit. The news of a commission of a fifth season is seen as the ultimate vote of confidence from the Big Wheels at Apple who obviously know a good thing when they see it.
Oldman is recently basking in a coveted Golden Globe nomination in his role as Jackson Lamb for Slow Horses and the remainder of the masterful and dynamic ensemble – Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan and Jonathan Pryce – aren’t exactly pikers, either. This is one series which can rightfully boast one of the very brightest casts in the world of television.
No start date for shooting season 5 of Slow Horses, but word ‘round industry campfire has it that the fourth season will begin airing during the fall of 2024.
