With a brand-spankin’ New Year now officially on the books – Hello, 2024! – it’s time to get down to the business of the really important things in life, namely what upcoming television series we can all set our daily planners around lest we miss the Next Big Thing! To help all of us out in that regard, our ever-meticulous pals over at The Hollywood Reporter have prepared a thorough guide to what we all can look forward to! For our part? We’ve distilled that list into what we like to call our special “cheat sheet.” It’s a completely biased list that we’ve distilled to reflect what sounds like the most exciting to us. Check it out and see what’s playing that you can’t live without seeing. Oh, and Happy New Year!
From the folks over at AMAZON comes at least one new TV offerings that we’re very keen to check out in the New Year: Expats is set to drop this January 26 and stars Nicole Kidman (yes, that Nicole Kidman) as a woman living among her group of fellow expatriates in no less of a sprawling city than Hong Kong. This one is based off of a lauded 2016 novel and looks worth checking out for the sheer virtue of the fact that Kidman is one of the best working actresses currently on the scene. She’s only gotten better with age, and we think this one will be a real winner for the Dead Calm star.
Across the street at the headquarters of Distinguished Competitor Apple comes the much-anticipated return of none other than the legendary Carol Burnett in the comedy series Palm Royale. This one’s all set to offer a scathing and uproarious take on the vaunted upper crust of society. Whatever. The real draw here is Ms. Burnett and we’d gladly watch almost anything put in front of us this side of Seasons of the Heart as long as the former Eunice Harper Higgins is gracing the screen at some time during the proceedings. This one drops sometime in the spring of 2024.
And lest we forget an Honorable Mention from Apple – Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are returning to the 1940s and World War II, producing Masters of the Air, their long-awaited followup to prior hits Band of Brothers and The Pacific. This premieres January 26, 2024.
The House That Uncle Walt Built (A.K.A. Disney) is getting ready to splash into ‘24 with Echo, a spinoff from Marvel superhero Hawkeye. After this one premieres on January 10, word ‘round industry campfire has it that yet another new voyage to a galaxy far, far away is gearing up and is entitled Star Wars: Acolyte. Being a little fatigued with the various and sundry Star Wars spinoffs, we think we might stick with another intriguing-sounding Disney series instead: Skeleton Crew starring Jude Law sounds positively up our alley!
Rounding out our Must-See List is the return of one of the nicest fellows to ever swing around a sling-blade, Billy Bob Thornton. The Monster’s Ball star will be featured in a Paramount+ series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan entitled Land Man. This series aims to take a good long look at the oil industry. No precise release date for this yet, but it is confirmed as a “go” for 2024.
As for other anticipated shows – Hey, we’re already setting our eye on 2025 for the
Netflix return of the final seasons of Cobra Kai and Stranger Things! Blame their delay on the recently resolved SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes which paralyzed most productions in Hollywood, necessitating a release date for those two immensely popular shows that was not in 2024, but rather sometime next year.
We here at Vents wish you all a Happy New Year!
