New Details Emerge On Upcoming Sequel “Twisters”

A while back we reported on a sequel which was in the works to director Jan de Bont’s 1996 cheesy classic Twister. For anyone that might have missed this Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton starring vehicle, let’s just say that the story definitely lives up to its title as it follows two storm chasers flirting with perhaps a bigger disaster than an F5 tornado: Divorce. This movie was an unlikely box-office hit and really the only odd thing is that it’s taken Hollywood – a town not usually known for its restraint in producing guaranteed money making sequels – is that it’s taken as long as it has to get around to a genuine followup to that smash summer hit.

From our Jami Gertz admirers over at Variety comes a major update on the long-gestating sequel to Twister, ingeniously titled Twisters (makes you wonder what James “Aliens” Cameron thinks of this play on words).

Set to be released by Warner Bros., Twisters is anything but a reboot maintains new leading man for the sequel Glen Powell (Anyone But You). Apparently Warner Bros. appreciates Powell’s sentiment, referring to the upcoming movie as a “new chapter” in the hoped-for franchise; ah, you gotta love semantics, right?

In a recent interview, Powell said that “It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”

Sadly, original Twister stars Phillip Seymore Hoffman died in 2014 and  Bill Paxton passed away in 2017, so those two character doors are forever closed (lest a recasting was done, which none of us who are confirmed Hoffman and Paxton fans would ever want to see). Yet Jami Gertz and Helen Hunt are still active on the acting scene, and a nicer Easter egg appearance we can’t think of than to have at least this duo put in a special appearance in the new film.

Concluding his thoughts on Twisters, Powell said that “I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.’”

Twisters will make box-office landfall sometime in 2024 with Lee Isaac Chung handling the directing duties.
