Cody Coyote’s Ottawa upbringing and First Nation ancestry have played a significant role in his growing artistic success. He’s enjoyed considerable success with prior singles such as a number 1 placing on the Indigenous Music Countdown in January 2020 with the track “Manidoo Dewe’igan” and another success with the track “Debwe”. He’s long since “crossed over” as well into mainstream markets with singles successes such as “Lovely” in the spring of 2023. He achieved a global reach with the latter single that featured the song playing across airwaves as far-flung as Brazil, Israel, the United States, Greece, and Australia, among others.
His new single “There Tonight” should have an even deeper impact. Coyote hasn’t yet produced a single as complete and engaging as “There Tonight” and it heralds a new chapter in his career. His predilection for tackling serious subject matter continues with the new single and it’s to his immense credit that Coyote makes it so palatable for modern audiences. It has compelling dramatic aspects, as well, that testify to the sharply written lyrics.
The words use a direct, conversational style that eschews even a hint of obscurity. It’s another strength of the song’s overarching immediacy. Paired with the intensely physical arrangement, Coyote’s energetic vocal puts the words to excellent use and conveys them from the point of view of someone mired neck-deep in the conflict the song depicts for listeners.
He opts for pre-programmed percussion to drive the song. It does cheapen the track’s heartbeat, however, as the cut’s production invests each component of the recording with warmth as well as undeniable muscle. It’s notable, however, to hear how that muscle manifests itself. “There Tonight” sounds like it’s close, crowding in on you, and sparks fly from virtually every second of the song.
Transitions from one verse into the next and throughout the song are spot-on and seamless. Despite the heavy electronic edge of Coyote’s backing, “There Tonight” never comes off as unnatural or manufactured. Much of this is because Cody Coyote exerts such an outsized presence on the song from his first line through the last.
For many listeners, this is one of the key distinctions between transformative as opposed to merely great pop music. Coyote’s success thus far isn’t hard to fathom. He commands your attention in each of his previous releases and his ability to capture you is stronger than ever with “There Tonight”. Listens to how he modulates his vocal energy throughout this song as well. It’s always exciting to hear an artist working at, arguably, an early peak of their powers.
We can expect this impressive run to continue. There’s certainly no sign of flagging engagement present in Coyote’s latest single; it’s the song of an artist interested in rendering the reality of life, as they see it, as close as possible. “There Tonight” scores there and checks off countless other boxes as well. Cody Coyote’s new single will be a smash for many listeners and will undoubtedly land this talented Canadian and First Nation descendant a bevy of new admirers.
