I wonder if they’re letting HGTV in on this?
Everything old is new again in the corner of the Warner Bros./Discovery backlot known as the DC Cinematic Universe (or DCCU if you’ve got a taste for acronyms). Though still stinging from the box-office disappointment of The Flash, there’s a new sense of optimism around those caped and cowled parts, thanks in no small part to the ascension of creative visionaries James Gunn (himself an exile from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Peter Safran to the tip-top of the spandex heap. These two mensch’s are calling the shots on an upcoming entirely reimagined DCCU, one which hopes to capture the hearts and minds of movie and comic book fans in a similar fashion to their crosstown rivals over at Disney-Marvel. Perhaps in preparation for that slate of forthcoming new feature films, a surprise announcement was made today via our All-Star Comics aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter regarding exactly where all of these highly anticipated flicks are going to be filmed at.
The Big Wheels at Warner Bros. announced this week that they will be adding no less than ten soundstages to their DCCU production hub which is located twenty miles outside of central London in the town of Leavesden. As part of this expansion, 400,000 extra feet of production space will be added (gotta have some extra elbow room for all of those super-thrown punches and ‘up,up and aways,’ right?). ‘Zero Hour’ for all of this construction work to begin is set for the sophomore quarter of next year, with the Kryptonian X-ray vision eyeing a 2027 completion date.
Both of the key architects in the revamped DCCU – aforementioned Gunn and Safran – will be on hand to offer their own take on the construction and by the time this HomeTown renovation is complete it will proudly boast a JSA brownstone-sized 29 stages and – Merciful Minerva, Wonder Woman! – 1.78 million square feet of production room.
In a press release which would make the legendary Gardner Fox and Dick Giordano proud (look ‘em up, kiddies), WBD Big Wheel Simon Robinson said that “Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden is globally recognized for its exceptional soundstages and facilities, and with this planned expansion adding significant capacity and capabilities, it will be home to even more incredible storytelling for both film and television projects. We are proud to not only be growing our productions in Leavesden and making it the main hub for DC Studios, but also to be growing our economic and community contributions to the U.K.’s creative sector.”
After a slew of bad press as of late (looking at you here, Alan Moore), it’s good to catch some good juju regarding the world of DC. We’ll keep our Jack Knight-like aviator goggles on the lookout for more good news from DC National as it comes in to us; stay frosty, y’all!
