S.F. Johnson releases glamorous album ‘Digital U*****’

With his career jumpstarted by a move to Tokyo in 2018, S.F. Johnson started his musical journey with 2021 project ‘Songs from an Empty Orchestra’. Embracing new sounds and directions, he told stories of the city, future blues, friendship and coping with change, recording the tracks in karaoke rooms and performing in Japanese Clubs. In 2022, he returned to the UK, now based in London, diving into a new project that saw him take an introspective and honest take on everyday life.

In the lead up to the highly anticipated ‘Digital U*****’, S.F. Johnson has been setting press alight with an essence to his music that seems to capture all new emotions. Across 10 tracks and 40 minutes, the album takes you on a journey of nostalgia, modernism, joy, melancholy and the swings of day to day life, taking on themes of family, uncertainty, love and youth. Johnson combines decades of pop and forms it into something entirely new, twangs of alt-rock, new wave, dream pop and disco are all present with this album having something for everyone across its hazy soundscape. Between calm and easy-going feelings, there is a darkness and apprehensive attitude throughout the project, lifting the themes up to more optimistic settings through the bright production.

Johnson shares on the meaning behind the project, “When I’m struggling, the only way I know how to help myself is through a song. I wrote down all the themes I wanted to talk through with myself: starting with childhood, family, purpose, my relationships, trust, fear, the past, hope, our place in the modern world.”
