The Californian began his official career in the 1980s after stumbling upon the official storyboard artist for the 1984 supernatural comedy film Ghostbusters while pursuing a multimedia animation degree. In the company of the absolute best of the best, Anthony leveraged the time to learn all that goes into storyboarding. In what turned out to be a life-changing exchange, Anthony was left inspired and truly moved by how closely storyboard artists are to creating a film; the intricacy, perfection in detail, and importance of cohesion among the crew were all the important factors he ticked in to become successful. With a greater role comes great responsibility, and the aficionado of perfection thoroughly loves bringing scripts to life with his unparalleled skills.
‘If you’re going to have a whole crew show up and you’re talking about 10 grand in the budget, just on one day shooting a film, I think it’s really important to have a blueprint for what you guys will do. I mean, this is, you know, and having that there, you know, whether you go through the exact storyboards or it may even initiate different ideas pertaining to the storyboard,’ shared Anthony about the increasing need for storyboard artists in limited-budget projects. The artist further emphasized the execution of the project with a minimal margin of error, the pressure following time constraints, a small team, and territorial limitations requiring a talented storyboard artist. He has worked on mega-scale commercial projects, including Pirates of the Caribbean and the long-running American TV series Pretty Little Liars, and has also drawn for Nickelodeon.
When asked about the advice he would give to the upcoming generation of storyboard artists, he quickly mentioned that drawing is the first building block in the process. He recalled his journey to get his first client as nerve-wracking but believes holding on, and optimism are the keys when you come from a background with no presence in the entertainment industry. His all-time favorite project is the zombie film Z Dead End, which he did with Robert Resto.
The podcast concluded with its standard segment, five-for-five rapid fire; Anthony Sturmas shared his LinkedIn profile for the listeners and interested collaborators to check out. Readers can head to Anthony Sturmas – IMDb to read about his projects and get a sneak peek into his upcoming films.
