Which Real Madrid Defender Was Best?

Real Madrid are famous for their attacking starlets, but over the years have also produced some phenomenal defenders who deserve recognition as top performers at Real. Which ones were among them?

Iker Casillas was an iconic figure at the heart of defense. A true professional with unquestionable professionalism, Iker never shied away from taking on even the toughest challenges head-on.

Zidane

At Bernabeu or watching from afar, it was impossible not to be impressed by Zidane. He epitomised aesthetic beauty on and off the pitch while leading his club and nation to final after final. Every season marked another trophy in Zidane’s cabinet.

Zidane prioritised playing Real Madrid’s best players in their most natural positions during his entire managerial tenure at Real Madrid. This was evident when Ronaldo was deployed inside the penalty area during each Champions League final he won with them, while also insisting upon an integrated midfield two featuring Kroos and Modric.

One such instance occurred during Madrid’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund. Zidane received the ball 12 yards outside Madrid’s penalty area as two Dortmund players attempted to close him down; then spun and volleyed it back across into Benzema for an easy tap-in goal.

Ramos

Sergio Ramos is widely regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs in football history. Born and raised in Sevilla’s youth system before joining Real Madrid and winning numerous titles as full-back or centre-half he has made history both at centre-half and full-back positions – an unmatched defender.

Real Madrid have an illustrious history in the Champions League and an admirable track record, yet a 10th title eludes them. Perhaps their greatest humiliation occurred during 2015-16 when Raul, Guti and Karim Benzema’s team was crushed by third-tier side Alcorcon in round 32 (dubbed “Alcorconazo”). That defeat stands out as one of their worst in club history.

Varane

Real Madrid is one of the most iconic clubs worldwide and holds a special connection to the Champions League as they were the inaugural winners and went on to dominate European football for decades after.

Los Blancos refused to concede defeat against Manchester City despite falling two goals behind. With a penalty awarded late on, Karim Benzema took it upon himself to take it and score.

He hit it perfectly, dipping it perfectly into the bottom corner to seal what will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history. There will never be another player like The Blonde Arrow; he truly led Real Madrid towards becoming one of the greatest teams ever seen in any league competition.

Santamaria

Santamaria arrived from Nacional Montevideo and quickly established himself as an integral member of Real Madrid, winning ten La Liga titles and three European Cups over nine seasons. Additionally, he played in his adopted nation at the 1962 World Cup where they experienced a disappointing group stage exit.

Van Nistelrooy was an exceptional player, providing both goals and technical know-how at Real Madrid during two consecutive league titles wins – scoring 25 times during his time with Los Merengues.

Real Madrid (Los Blancos to their fans worldwide) have won both the Champions League (14 times) and La Liga (35 times) over their history, cementing themselves as one of the greatest clubs worldwide.

Di Stefano

Di Stefano did much to build Real Madrid’s legacy during his brief time there. As part of a squad known as Galacticos, Di Stefano played an essential part in their success.

Real Madrid were facing an arduous challenge from Manchester City’s Premier League-leading side that featured an array of superstars. Yet even as Manchester City raced into an early lead thanks to goals by Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus, Los Blancos held their composure and eventually came through victorious.

Cristiano Ronaldo earned a free-kick in an unsafe area and successfully placed it into one corner of the goal in just the 77th minute.
