31 years is a lot of water under the bridge for anyone, let alone two of the top tier talents in Hollywood – actor and comedian Eddie Murphy and director Reginald Hudlin. The two talents first united on the 1992 film Boomerang which told the story of a lady’s man (Murphy) who winds up getting a taste of his own medicine. The film was full of piss and vinegar when it was released, and showcased an actor and a director at the tip-top of their respective games. It’s no surprise that Murphy and Hudlin would opt to make another film together. What is surprising is that it took 31 years for their follow-up movie to finally hit the scene. Wait, no – Scratch that: The truly surprising thing is not that the two waited so long to reteam on a project, but that the project they’re reuniting for is, of all things, a Christmas movie…What did you expect, a bawdy comedy?
From our Trading Places pals over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news today that Eddie Murphy and Reginald Hudlin are set to reunite for the new Christmas film Candy Cane Lane.
Written by wordsmith Kelly Younger, Candy Cane Lane features Murphy as an ordinary bloke called Chris who is bound and determined to score the major win for his neighborhood Christmas decoration contest. As is usually the case in situations like this, Murphy sets up a pact with an elf called Pepper, the benevolent creature brings to full-fledged life the literal 12 Days of Christmas; pandemonium ensues (we assume).
Candy Cane Lane features an all-star cast composed of Tracee Ellis Ross, Nick Offerman, Robin Thede, Chris Redd, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Ken Marino, Genneya Walton, Madison Thomas, D.C. Young Fly, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes and Nancy Lenehan.
As is often the case in the wild and wooly days of streaming, this new Eddie Murphy flick will see its release not on the silver screen, but on the television set: Candy Cane Lane is set to premiere the whole world over on December 1 only on Amazon Prime Video. This film marks Murphy’s second such straight-to-streaming gig with Prime, the first one being the long-awaited sequel to Coming to America (with the either overly simplistic or delightfully simple title of – pick your mileage – Coming 2 America).
So just in time for the Christmas season, we’ve got what’s sure to be a crowd-pleasing holiday movie from Eddie Murphy – Enjoy it, because his next outing really looks to be something else: A fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise!
