We’re excited to be speaking today with acclaimed pop artist and singer and songwriter extraordinaire, Sam Hart; greetings and salutations, Sam! Before we meander down the Q&A musical pathway, how goes the summer of 2023 for you?
Hi, thanks so much for having me, I’m so happy to be here 🙂 Summer is going well, It’s been jam-packed with friends, family and weekend adventures with my dog Ellie. I hope you’re having a great summer too!
Major congratulations on your freshly-minted new single Thirty and Thriving! What was the inspiration behind this gem?
Thank you so much! This song was inspired by my personal struggles with getting older. I think it’s a universal feeling and everyone deals with it differently. Ultimately, I felt I was falling behind my peers and wasn’t at the place I thought I’d be in my life. While working on this song, my perspective shifted drastically, I finally accepted that achieving your goals takes time and everyone has a different timeline. After reflecting on this topic, during the song-making process, I realized I’m living so many of my dreams already and that was an amazing feeling!
Thirty and Thriving was produced and mixed by TOMPA. What was the collaboration process like between artist and producer in the studio while working on this gem of a tune?
TOMPA is the best, he’s always willing to stack the backup vocals highhhhh and I had a great time singing as many harmonies as we could think of. Though the song is really personal and sad, TOMPA was so patient with listening to my ideas, always adding a joke here and there to make me laugh. Collaborating with him was seamless, he understood every strange explanation I came up with and he turned that into the song that I’m so incredibly proud of.
How is Thirty and Thriving similar to some of your past music? How is it different?
Similarly to my past tracks, Thirty and Thriving has tons of background vocals. I love adding tons of backup vocals to my tracks! I would say I’ve never done so much self-reflecting with my own lyrics before and that’s why Thirty and Thriving differs from the rest of my music.
Can you introduce our ever-inquisitive readers to some of the other talented musicians that lent their musical alchemy in the creation of Thirty and Thriving?
Of course! Joao Carvalho mastered the track and my friend Vibi listened to countless versions at each stage, giving helpful feedback when I needed it.
On the heels of the release of the new single, can fans look forward to an EP or LP release from you before the end of 2023 or perhaps in early 2024?
I’m releasing a few singles in the upcoming months! I’m super excited for each of them.
You hail from the beautiful country of Canada. How do those roots inform you as an artist and as a person?
Yes, I do! I love lots of things about Canada, it’s so beautiful. I grew up close to the American border in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I think my Canadian roots play a big part in how friendly I am. I know it’s a huge stereotype that Canadians are nice but I generally think so many people I meet in Canada are very kind. Also, I tend to say “sorry” way too many times a day hahaha.
The album artwork for Thirty and Thriving is exquisite and really evokes a mood and feeling of nostalgia. Who do we have to thank for this mini-masterpiece?
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like it. My mom took this photo on my 7th birthday and I found it in our family archives while I was looking through old photo albums. My creative partner Nolan Bedley, who does all of my visuals with me, brought the cover art to life using my handwriting for the print.
Who inspires you musically?
So many of my friends inspire me musically, especially my friend Vibi, who is constantly writing and creating so many incredible songs. Like so many others, Taylor Swift is also a huge musical inspiration for me. I think it’s remarkable how versatile her writing is, she always breaks my heart and puts it back together with each album. I’ve been a fan of hers since her debut album and it’s been amazing to hear her songwriting evolve.
At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving a good listen or three to Thirty and Thriving?
I hope listeners can relate to the song in some way and know their not alone.
