EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: ZELIHA

Hey Zeliha! Welcome to VENTS. Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a singer-songwriter based predominantly out of Sydney, Australia, although I travel a lot! I’ve been to about 20 countries and so home is everywhere for me. Since a very young age I have been connected and creating music, there’s no escaping now!

What makes your music unique?

I really like to draw from my personal experience so that it feels authentic and real, I like to experiment and often its either to left of field or too pop so I’m always striving to find the middle ground so its stays fresh and unique but relatable.

We caught a glimpse of you on tour with Kid Ink on his Australian national tour. Tell us about that!

Yes, so last year I embarked on a remarkable journey supporting basketball legend Rock Middleton alongside the Harlem Globe Trotter Australian National Tour. From that I went onto support rapper Kid Ink on his Australian national tour.

What musical influences did you listen to growing up that helped to mold you into the artist you are today?

Jazz blues 90’s 00’s pop, Hip Hop, R&B, and current music. I love listening to new music or undiscovered artists there’s just so much music out there. Growing up some of my favorite artists were, Ray Charles, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, Rihanna, Outkast, Method Man, Jennifer Lopez, and Amy Winehouse.

Which artists would you like to collaborate with in future?

Post Malone everything that guy touches turns to gold.

Tell us about your song ‘Like Me’

When I was younger, I struggled with acne and acne scarring, which led me to compare myself constantly to the flawless images portrayed by the hottest models and influencers on social media. In today’s world, we are consumed by apps like Instagram, TikTok, and others, spending significant time on our screens, mesmerized by the seemingly “picture-perfect” lives of others. We get caught up in the number of likes, comments, and followers, losing sight of reality.

One day, I had an awakening. I realized that constantly seeking validation from others and striving for perfection is an endless and fruitless pursuit. I understood that I will never be perfect, but that’s okay because perfection isn’t real. I needed to love myself from within and accept my imperfections to find true happiness.

That realization inspired me to write a song that reflects this newfound self-love and acceptance. With the support of my good friends Kartik Kuna and Jordan Leonard, we crafted a positive and upbeat track. We had a blast experimenting with phone sounds in the song, symbolizing the digital world’s influence on our self-perceptions.

The message of the song is clear: ‘I don’t need anyone to like me, I need to like me’ what truly matters is that I like myself and embrace my uniqueness. This sentiment resonates with many others who have also felt the pressures of social media and the unrealistic standards it perpetuates. Through the song, we aim to spread positivity, self-empowerment, and the understanding that true happiness comes from within, not from the validation of others.

What are some of the instruments you chose within the beat?

There’s a lot of pop in this song, we were inspired by using phone sounds, notifications sounds you hear when you’re on different Apps or typing etc.

What can fans expect from the music video?

Lots of smiles, dancing, and lots of denim. I chose to visually display denim with styling because I believe denim is such a universal fabric most people wear from all different backgrounds. And I liked the idea of putting different color denims together to spread a message of togetherness.

Where was the music video filmed?

In the streets of Sydney, Australia.

What do you hope your supporters will think of the new song?

I hope that it connects with the listener regardless of your age, gender, background etc.. we all live in this era of a digital world, and we can all be so consumed by it. I hope that it helps people to stop and put their phone down for a moment and acknowledge that you’re beautiful and life is beautiful and don’t need anything outside of yourself to validate that.
