“Shazam: Fury of the Gods” Star Zachary Levi Criticizes Current-Day Hollywood Movie Output (and we kind of agree with him)

It’s gotta be tough to be an actor in this day and age. One small slip-up of the finger on your Twitter (or is that ‘X’ now?) account, or one moment of public weakness at a press junket for your latest movie where you allow an unpopular opinion you possess to become known to the masses, and – POOF! – you’ve got an entire army of outraged social media folks coming after you like you were Boris Karloff in the final reel of Frankenstein. These are strange and sensitive times we’re in indeed (just ask latest human celebrity pinata Woody Harrelson), but that’s apparently not enough to silence one of the better actors currently on the movie scene, Zachary Levi.

According to our very sensitive pals over at The Hollywood Reporter, Shazam star Zachary Levi (he’ll always be Captain Marvel in our comic book addled minds), has followed a string of controversial remarks he made about the ever-ongoing actor’s strike and its rules with a potentially debate-stirring train of thought about the current state of the movie industry. Hint: He doesn’t think it’s too good.

“I personally feel like the amount of content that comes out of Hollywood that is garbage — they don’t care enough to actually make it great for you guys,” Levi said at the Fan Expo convention in Chicago over the weekend to a hearty round of applause from the audience.  “They don’t. How many times do you watch a trailer and go, ‘Oh my God, this looks so cool!’ Then you go to the movie and it’s like, ‘This was what I get?’ They know that once you’ve already bought the ticket and you’re in the seat, they’ve got your money. And the only way for us to change any of it is to not go to the garbage. We have to actively not choose the garbage. It’ll help. It’ll help a lot.”

We’re too polite here at the Vents offices to name specific culprits in the world of bad cinema, but we gotta admit that a lot of what Levi is saying rings true to us. Don’t believe there’s a dearth of good and fun movies out there? Pick up any newspaper and thumb on over to the movie listings and, outside of the occasional anomaly such as Oppenheimer or Barbie (both of which also have their own detractors), try to find more than one or two major studio movies which genuinely excite you and pique your curiosity. It’s slim pickings, isn’t it? Or do we need to check our ever-lovin’ prescriptions?

There are some seeming bright spots on the way, however: Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon looks to be the auteurs own version of A Place In the Sun, while other 2023 films which have come and gone by this point like Beau Is Afraid and Asteroid City have also renewed our faith in the future of the movies. And, looking towards 2024, we have a brand-spankin’ new film from maestro Francis Ford Coppola en route (Megalopolis) as well as a JFK assassination film from award-winning playwright and filmmaker David Mamet which is being eyed as a Paul Schrader-directed vehicle, and nothing less than an epic Western film from Kevin Costner himself.

We’ll keep everyone up to date on both the good and the bad as it pertains to the movies – Sit tight, little campers!
