After a Surprise Cancellation by Netflix, “Warrior Nun” Finds New Life As Series of Upcoming Feature Films

It’s not all that often in an industry where the bottom line is profits and not creativity to get another shot at the coveted brass ring, specifically as it applies to ratings-challenged television series. Off of the top of our wizened old noggins, Arrested Development, Star Trek, Community, Jericho, Family Guy, Doctor Who, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Futurama and Cagney & Lacey are the real stand-outs in the Lazarus Sweepstakes. But every now and again another contestant will enter into that Promised Land of further televised (or theatrical for the real fortunate ones) adventures. Ladies and Gentlemen, may we present to you the officially continuing storylines of fan-favorite Netflix series Warrior Nun!

Quick primer for the uninitiated and future Warrior Nun fans: Based off of a comic book series from creator Ben Dunn and brought to life through the wily alchemy of Simon Barry and streaming service Netflix, this fantasy drama follows a teen on her own who discovers she has superpowers which she must use as the selected Halo-Bearer of a top-secret group of demon-chasing nuns. Sounds complicated? Trust us – Check out the two season 18 episode run and the improbable will seem quite likely indeed.

Anyhoo, Netflix kicked the proverbial hornet’s nest of fans recently when it announced that it was pulling the plug on the series after two seasons. But, to paraphrase from the great Mark Twain, rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated, according to our ‘Now you see it, now you don’t’ pals over at The Hollywood Reporter

Warrior Nun is returning as a trilogy of feature films, according to executive producer and all-around swell guy Dean English this past Tuesday. The welcome news comes on the heels of last month’s uber-fan campaign to rescue the series and the June 28 announcement from Simon Barry where the erstwhile creator revealed vaguely that “Warrior Nun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine.”

Dean English made the impending Warrior Nun proceedings quite official-like with his sanctioned and slightly more detailed version of what exactly fans can look forward to.

“I need to start by thanking all of you loyal fans. It’s because of you and your incredible energy that we keep pushing forward to make these stories. You guys really make it all worthwhile. So thank you so much for your continued support,” English enthused.”I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three.”

Further details, according to English, will have to await the ever-ongoing dual SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes which have almost paralyzed not only the film and television communities, but also numerous local economies which rely on active productions to stay afloat. Hang in there kiddies and welcome back Warrior Nun!
